Re: What's Happened to this Place?

My concern with this topic and my original intent was to find out why people were not posting more often. I think it has been answered. As for me, this is my only group. I simply can't figure out the FTE site and Facebook was an absolute disaster. Hopefully, somebody will be able to bring this place...

electronic ignition choices

I have been mulling over upgrading to electronic ignition. I can't determine which of the following two options is best. The little chip that you put into the existing distributor, or the GM-like distributor with the HEI guts. If I go the former, am I supposed to get the hot-shot ignition coil also?...

What's Happened to this Place?

What has happened to this website? I remember when a post would get pushed off the front page after a few days. I just noticed that I was still the last poster to this forum, yet my recent posts were almost 10 days old. I could understand other members refusing to read my babble. It wouldn't be the ...

Re: Differential!?

$850! I guess it's my fault. You ignore something long enough and it will bite you back. After washing the diff, I noticed that the oil leak was fairly universal. There was quite a bit of slap in the yoke. And even a periodic clunk. I had to make a decision; do I go buy a new car or fix this old thi...

Re: Differential!?

I figure there are only three way that I can get help: First, I can pay someone, but at the snail's pace that I work, it would cost me a fortune; Second, I could find a friendly neighbor, but I am pretty sure the electric barbed wire fence and the 75 pound German Shepherd have turned most of my neig...

Differential!?

After hearing a nasty noise under the truck, I decided it was time to check the driveshaft. It was 100 degrees outside and I didn't really have the energy to get this 70 yo protoplasmic antique outside, but if I didn't do it, who would. But first, I tried a few service stations (five, to be exact). ...

Re: It‘s shot. I‘m shot.

I spoke too soon. There is oil all over the motor, especially the valve cover. It seems that oil might be getting out of the valve cover from both the oil entry hole AND the PCV hole. I have just about given up. The engine is spewing oil (well, about a quart every 1500 miles), the transmission is cl...

Re: It‘s shot. I‘m shot.

Using my lifetime of advanced deductive skills (there was a huge puddle of oil on top of the motor), I determined that the valve cover gasket was bad. So I removed the valve cover, cleaned and degreased it, and glued a new gasket to it. Although they looked good, I also hammered straight the metal a...

Re: It‘s shot. I‘m shot.

OK. Since my last post, I have been looking at new and used vehicles. I have not been this upset and disgusted since the last time this thing has failed on me. Every used vehicle I saw had over 200,000 miles or more. Mine has 140,000. Yet, the cheapest price was $5,000. All the rest were $8,000 or m...

It‘s shot. I‘m shot.

She is spewing out oil, apparently from the rear main seal. The tranny is shot. The diff is shot. The clutch has 80,000+ miles on it. The doors are shot. The roof is shot. The floor is shot. The steering is shot. The seat is shot. The multiple rebuilt engine has 140,000 miles on the last overhaul. E...

Re: new starter on't engage

Thanks. Ill try that. But I am also going to check the plunger for wear or warpage. The starter DID work for a few weeks before it stopped engaging. It had sat in the tool box for years before I needed it (I always have spare vital parts in my toolbox). Now if I could only get a couple of doors, the...

Well, its been a month. I still have heat and I still have a full radiator. Almost forgot the horrible sense that my truck is no longer capable of holding water. Now if I could only get two doors.

new starter on't engage

My relatively new starter stopped moving the drive gear into the flywheel. It just spins. I am not talking about the drive engaging but slipping. This is simply that the starter won't move the drive forward. I don't want to return it to the parts store as it will be the fourth starter that I will ge...

Re: Finally. Heat!

Well, would you believe that during my heater core test ride (50 miles), the alternator failed. And when I changed it out the water pump failed (water all over the place, in fact the shepherd got a full bath). And of course on the coldest day of the year. And the auto store did not have the right lo...

Re: I broke the shaft on the clutch petal

It'll break again. In fact, I'll bet if you look closely at it, you will see that it was repaired at least once before. What I did was buy 2 3/8" ball joints and a threaded rod at ACE hardware. Eight years later, it is still working as well as when I installed it with no wear in the ball joints...

Finally. Heat!

After fifteen years, I finally have heat. The engine began to overheat and I started to smell something in the cab, as well as seeing some wet stains under the plenum. So I picked up a replacement heater core at Auto Zone. The new core was extremely light (made of aluminum), and I was worried about ...

Re: Replacement Seals ???

Top, that penny here dime there syndrome is one of the reasons I am thoroughly going over this vehicle now. If I can get the wipers better than original or the brakes completely redone, they won't fail me for many years. Also keep in mind that the drive train is electric with no batteries, so everyt...

Re: Replacement Seals ???

The reason this is not in the truck forum is because it is not about the pickup. The vehicle in question is a 50 year old junk yard 914. ALL of the brake components are frozen. They all have to come out and be overhauled. I can get seals for the calipers, but not for the M/C or P/V. Also, the windsh...

Re: She's gone.

Well, that didn't last long. She was being spayed when the vet called me to tell me there were complications. But because I did not answer the phone immediately, they closed her up without doing the repair.
