If it were me I stick with the V8. Sure the 300 will get better mileage but I doubt it will be worth the loss of power or the work to do the swap. Neither engine is going to get good mileage towing 6000 lbs plus the weight of the trailer. What is the 360 from?

Bill I know they changed the gas filler necks in 1972. and even further up like 73-79 trucks. I don’t ever recall seeing any of those years leaking gas down the side. The extra width will make them even harder to get on. You may have to jack the axle down to get them on.

That should work out well. It's a shame you already did your frame, may have been easier to just mount the cab on the newer chassis.

I think you will need something to stiffen the plywood across the center or it will sag.

I built a hard cover a few years ago and used bedliner to cover it instead of vinyl.
