Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Possibly purchasing a "bench" seat this afternoon. If it is the right length I will swap the bucket seats out. Anyone interested in a great set of Black Leather bucket seats in very good condition, let me know...I will make you a great deal on them. This is what I am looking at...very simi...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Still driving and enjoying the truck. Waiting to upgrade the rear-end gearing. I'm also researching air-bags. Not sure that is the route I want to go...or not.
Drivability and gas mileage is great...
Stay tuned....

Re: 300 finally died. Motor is out.... what now?
I currently have a '64 F-100, but 20 years ago I owned a '66 with the 300. That is a great engine. Mine did the same and I purchased a new long-block assembly locally. It was the same on the highway as these old trucks are geared for "farm work" and 1960's speed limits. Two ways to help wi...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Hey Steve, I spoke with my friend last night and he said he knew he has a 3:10 because it is a strange ratio. He also said he was sure he has 3:00's for "a very low price" (probably free) if you are interested. Give me a call if you have questions Thanks Doug! I'll be in touch soon....tha...

Re: What parts can I use from a 1970 F100 on my 1966?
Here is an article that I saved in my files that helped me immensely. I did cut mine down 9 inches on my '64 F-100 after installing a T5 and I still had to take it to a local driveshaft shop to balance it. $97.50 out the door and ready to bolt in. I couldn't get the "run- out" within toler...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Bill....you are correct. I think that the '77 Dana 44 axle would have fit under my truck, but I would have to change my wheels. I like my wheels. I don't want to change my wheels. It would make me sad to not have those wheels on my truck.... https://i.postimg.cc/VsKM8Z1G/New-Rear-Tires-7-22-20-8.jpg...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
That's interesting. I was expecting you to tell us it tucked right under. On the 65 4x4 I've been wrenching on, I swapped under the same rear axle, a Dana 44, from a late 70's 2wd f100 so I could use an e-locker for off road. I've got factory Bullet style aluminum wheels from a later model F150 and...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
I'm running steelies that I purchased from Summit a few years ago. I forgot what the backspacing is, but with the 275/60-15 tires I had about 1 1/2" of clearance on each side. I want to keep my wheels. The '77 axle is 5" wider than my stock '64 axle....66" verses 61". That was th...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Well....Never Mind. The '77 axle is just tooooo wide. Lesson learned. Do a lot of measuring before purchasing. Anyone interested in a good axle? I'll make a great deal on it....lol.....

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Wrestled and grunted under the truck for awhile this afternoon. I almost finished removing the original axle...just the two U-bolts on the passenger side remain. If time permits tomorrow, I will finish removal of the axle and test fit the '77 axle.
Stay tuned....

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
For those who are following the axle part of this thread....My truck has the original 9 inch Ford rear axle with 3.70 ratio. The axle that I purchased is a '77 Dana 44 with 2.72 ratio. The two axles are different. The '77 axle is actually 2 1/2 inches wider than the '64 axle and I feel confident tha...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
you could pull both center sections and just swap the new ring gear on to your old 28 spline carrier.you 'll never have to touch the pinion or pinion depth and if you measure the backlash before you take it apart you should be able to get it back pretty close.ive done this several times in my swapp...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
are you going from 9" to 9"?if so wouldnt swapping center sections be easier?im not familiar if the 64 downs used a 9.i know my 66 does. You are correct...swapping the center section (some call it the "chunk, lol) would be much easier. But the cost would be substantially higher. I'm ...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Steve I put a Mustang T5 in the Turk with a final gear of .68, rear is a 3.50. I turn just over 2100 at seventy and average 22 mpg with my 292Y block. never got much over 12 mpg with the original T98 and 3.89 gears so I am happy as a pig... now it is still a little tourque-y in first-3rd but I also...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Are your rear tires going to fit under the fender with the '77 axle? Hard to tell until you try and easy to change but I think 2.72 might be going to far. It might put your rpms to low, not enough power, lugging the engine, more downshifts out of overdrive, etc. Will certainly be interesting to see...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Looking good Steve. Pretty major upgrade with not exactly bolt on compatibility... has to feel good. Thanks! I was a "job" to get done. I went to NC last night and obtained a '77 F-150 rear axle with 2.72 gearing. That will be my next upgrade. The transmission was not geared as I hoped, s...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
I did some digging from the tag number on my new T5. 1993 GM world class and the gear ratio is higher than I realized (I might have said that backwards, it might be "lower"...lol). But anyway, 1st gear is 4.03, 2nd is 2.37 and so forth, but 5th is .86. Based on an RPM calculator here's wh...
