Hoodproblems

Post by chiquita »

Or should I say hingeproblems. My hood fits like it was drunk. But the local junkyard only got newer F100/250.Early seventies. Do the hinges fits? Maybe its not a good idea if they are worn out anyway.

the only way to be certain of those hinges is to shell out the big bucks for a set of new ones. And then the fix is only until they wear out again.. they last a notoriously short time so make sure the new ones are well lubricated at all times. I am amazed someone has not come up with a nylon-bushing version that would last a bit longer, but none so far. A Man could do a land office business rebuilding these things with better parts IMO.

Or you could do what the guys with the fat fenders, which had even less dependable hinges do. Put a kit on your hood to open it the other way, and it can't fly open..

Even with new hinges, these hoods flap around like flag in a windstorm. Make sure you run a hitch pin thru your safety latch until you get new hinges.

I had the same problem having to push down one side of the bonnet & then going around the other side and pushing it down to get it to close properly. But after seeing an article in Custom Truck magazine I decided to make a forward tilt mechanism. Problem solved.
If you like I can give you the measurements to make your own. I have posted photos of the bonnet in use in my album (as I don't know how to include photos to posts from my album)

Alan,
Can you send me the measurements and some close up pics of your tilt hood? I may be interested in doing something similar to mine. How do you hold down the rear of the hood?
Thanks,
Kevin

I thought my hood was screwed up (the PO told me he thought the hinges were upside down!!! LOL), but then I tried the hood on a few other slicks and they were all the same. At least they never break down, you only need to lift the hood to show off your motor to your friends lol!!!

The hinges were a problem, but it may not be all of your problem. Sagging front cab mounts could be affecting the closing of the hood also, along with P/O forcing the hood down. Lack of lubrication, and and forcing will cause damage to the hood, and hinges. You need to check for damage to the area where the hood mounts to the hinges. The cross brace is not welded to the hood in the front, and if there is a gap there, it's possible the brace has been bent. The area where the hood bolts are can also be bent and damaged, very common. There is also some adjustment that can be made to the hinges on the firewall, not much, but some. I have several used hinges, but it's hard to tell if any of these are good. It's obvious when these are really bad, but not so obvious otherwise.

Alan, thanks!

When the hood/bonnet is open, what does it rest against? Hate the thought of it going through the grille.

Mike C,
At the moment mine rests on the over riders, but Im working on another idea as with everything its a work in process you may notice I`ve shown
part (C) with drill holes on one end and not rod ends, this will I hope give
an earlier lift and look better. The one in my truck is the original design but will do to get back on road for now.

Alan, very cool. I have also seen forward tilt hoods done with 90s buick hinges, they don't however move ouut of the way as far as your does. What is that intake system you have on your truck?

Yep Phil those are the original style mirrors. They are available from several sources reproduction if you want them.
Alan, that setup and on a Cleveland is just way too cool. So am I correct those just bolt on a standard 4v carb intake flange?

Alan,
Thank you for the measurements and the pics of the tilting hood. It looks really good. When I get back to work on my truck, I will seriously consisder building this for mine. That is if it ever cools off here in Phoenix. I have to leave town to go to Sturgis for the motorcycle rally and then off to northern Idaho to do a job up there. So that leaves my truck sitting in the garage with nothing being done to it for another month.
Thanks again
Kevin

Greg,Yes it willbolt up to a standard manifold, but it will work better with a
single plain plenum manifold for the LPG & should have LPG cam & valve seats.Alan

I noticed the LP gas thing. Do they also make this setup for gasoline? I didn't see it on the site.
