1961 F350 Axle Code

Hiya guys/gals. The plate in the glove box gave me a code of F27. I am trying to figure out whether this was a drw or srw and if it ever had a bed on it. I did a search here and didn't really come up with much. Right now it has a flat bed, but I would like to put a bed on it. I enjoy fabrication and I am a glutton for punishment. I stated in another post that this was bought and used for a farm truck for a few years until the engine went boom. I believe it was a farm truck before that also. So I guess what I am saying is that I do not put much weight in the current configuration. Any input about the bed or drw/srw would be appreciated!

an f350 if it had a bed from the factory was a 9 foot long bed and either the 57-60 style or flareside.
rear end was governed by engines, the 8 cyl had 4.88 and the 6 had 5.14.
the 27 code is the 5.14
heres a few pics
if it had duals the front axle would have had these wheels
Image

if it was single they look like this

the front wheels are not interchangeable between srw and drw without changing the hubs.

here is the 65 f350 factory brochure, very little changed between 61 and 66, most noticeably the 65 replaced the 223 and 292 with the 240 and 352 engines.

Ice, when's the last time you've seen that heavy-rated Timken in a SRW truck? Jarhead, shoot me the model code and we may be able to narrow it down.

Ice, you lost me somewhere!?! The "27" code in a '61 is a Timken 5:14 . I have never seen that rectangular axle housing unit in a SRW of any year. That's why I asked Jarhead to send the model number; the GVW rating might also be helpful, since again, I've only seen the Timken in the 10,00 gvw duallies.

....and here I was assuming the 5.13 SRW diff in my '64 M-350 was a Dana?? Are you telling me my diff is a Timken?? Here's how little I know, I didn't even know Timken built diffs :?

the 61 factory manual says only timken is used in the f350.

James, I don't know anything about those foreign trucks :P and I don't have my '64-up book here at the house. I'm pretty sure that the SRW's are going to be the Dana (Spicer) 70, but can't verify that. I'm sure you know how to tell the difference; the Dana's look like a Chebbie rear, with a removable access plate at the rear. The Timken is a TRUCK axle, with drop-out member ala the Fords, welded housing and the aforementioned rectangular axles. I was hoping Ice would weigh back in, as I personally have never seen an OEM Timken SRW setup, and I believe it would be overkill for the 8800 maximum GVW of the single wheels. BTW, application for application, you CAN put the single type wheel on the dually assembly, it's just real hard to find the six lug wheel these days. I've pulled many a truck home with the single wheel in place of a missing or flat dual, and vice versa.

Ice, axle code 23 on the '61's is a 5.13 Spicer 70, which in my experience is most commonly found on the SRW vehicles. Ma Bell had a bunch of them in the day, I assumed they were fairly rare even then; especially when trying to obtain parts at 3 a.m.!

Got me curious now as to what is in R. Whistle's truck. I can't remember the history behind it though!

all I have is a pic of the old axle.swapped the 6 lug out for an 8 lug dana 70. I thought it was a dana 70 6 lug.

take a look and see what you think. looks like the one my 66 f350 had in it also.

just went and looked at data plate on 61.trans f for borg warner axle code 27 9800 gvw

pulled out data plate from 66 I kept when it burnt trans A for np 435 axle code 22 10,000 gvw with single tires?

Paul: Well, my firewall tag says the GVW is 8,000 Lbs & the dif has an inspection cover on the back, not a dropout carrier. As far as wheel swapping (SRW/DRW), I recall someone telling me that 'Binders of the same vintage shared the same six bolt wheel/BC?

James, I have also heard that some of the IHs interchange but never verified it. I will look it up in Hollander. Your truck is what I would expect to find, Robert's certainly appears to be a Spicer also, but his code indicates the Timken 5.14 as oem.

(realizing this thread is several years dead) I have a 61 f350, drw, gvw of 9800. The Axle code on the warranty tag shows as 29.. which doesnt seem so exist even in the ford shop manual. The rear dif looks to be a dana 70. Not a huge issue as the truck will most likely be receiving a chassis transplant down the road. Just bugging me that i cant find ANY info on what the Axle Code 29 actually is (or even that it existed). Any info would be much appreciated.

Grifter: Your profile and signature have no location info, but if you (or your '61) happen to be in Canada, the Warranty Plate info/Nomenclature is completely different than the US produced trucks........
