Chrome Shops?

Post by LM14 »

Anyone know of a good chrome shop in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois area? Maybe even southern Minnesota or Wisconsin. Have a bumper I want to get done.

Thanks,

That's a good neighborhood for a plating shop. No way the EPA would want to hang out in that neighborhood!

Thanks, I'm checking with them,

Here's the scoop on getting chrome plating at Industrial Plating in Omaha.

I called this morning and talked to Cory. This is what I learned:

They don't do big one piece bumpers like on a slick. They do smaller bumpers, like 3 piece, but not our big ones. They send them to North Star Plating in Brainerd Minnesota.

North Star will straighten, repair and do all the prep work before plating. No need to try to repair anything. They normally have a 12 week period on turn-around time. Cost between $400-600 is common per bumper, it depends on amount of work needed to get it ready and the actual size of the bumper. North Star does nothing but bumpers.

Industrial Plating will do emblems, pot metal and other trim pieces.

I also asked about anodized trim. They can strip, repair and polish aluminum trim. They cannot brite dip the parts. They don't even have a company they work with to brite dip anymore, he said it's a very nasty chemical process and he wasn't even aware of a company in the US still doing brite dip. IP hasn't brite dipped in many, many years. They either polish and anodize or chrome as a final product.

That's the scoop for everyone on chat last night and I think it answers all the questions. Looks like you guys in Canada are closer to the chrome shop that most of us in the States. Brainerd is almost Canada!

Later all,

Just had this very conversation today at work. I've had Industrial Plating do some work on my Fairlane. They do nice work, but it takes a while and is costly. As I recall, some times of the year are slower than others, I just don't know which one. There's another place in Omaha where I bought the front bumper for my truck. It is called Bumper and Auto of Omaha on south 13th. They were reasonable and had one in stock for 64-66 trucks which I believe was actually for 67-72s, but who cares.

My co-worker said there's a guy in Sioux City that also does chrome work, but he had no specifics on the name of the shop or even which Sioux City (I think there are three) :? .

I had stuff done by Sioux Plating back in the mid 70's when I lived in Atlantic. Nothing big but we had a local body shop that sent stuff t them all the time.

I have a nice, original bumper for my '66 so it has the correct curvature, just needs to be shinny.

I'll check with Bumper and Auto next. Think I even know where that one is located. Update: I think from my conversation and by looking at their web site they only offer parts and not the actual plating service? They sell the same re-pop front 64-77 front bumper as everyone else.

I sent an email to Sioux Plating, will update when I get a response.

Tri-City Plating in TN did mine. They make the rounds of the car shows so you can drop off or pick up there and save yourself at least half the shipping. Good quality, fair price.

Well, after waiting all week, I never received a response from Sioux Plating. Guess they don't need any business. Sent them 2 emails and called but never got an answer.

I'll keep this shopping trip going. Going to try to call Sioux Plating again this week and see what gives. They also list several locations around the Midwest so maybe I'll try some of those and see what's up.

The sioux city address for Sioux Plating is 357 Wesley Pkwy. Phone number 712-258-5995, that is their bodyshop supply outlet. They cater to the body shops in the midwest and possibly one near you. Possibly see if they will pickup your bumper and drop off at your nearest bodyshop or retailer near you. The address for the site that the replating goes on is in South Sioux City Nebraska on East 9th Street. I'll try to locate a good phone number for you as they are not listed in the local phone book any more. I've heard from a competitor that they are no longer using the copper dip for prep any more, it's the epa thing. Both business's are owned by the same guy. I'll try to locate a phone number for the unlisted business. I've had some small pieces done by them in the last few years and they turned out real nice.

One thing to keep in mind with plating is that not everyone gets the same price. If you can send your stuff out through someone who gets a lot of work done, the price drops significantly. Years ago I had bumpers replated for a 3-4x the cost of a guy who worked at the Cleveland bus garage and got the business-business discount. Of course I only found out after already getting my work done.

Here's another option.

Never had a bumper done there but had stainless steel trim straightened and polished by them and it came back beautiful.
Guy estimated. 600 for my front 64 Ford includes straighten and plating. He DOES job out the plating…not many want to mess with all the chemistry waste and EPA I suspect.

And just an fyi, Try to do this before you send it to them. if you can sandblast clean white metal on the inside surface you will end up with a better final product IMHO. get the edges sanded smooth too if possible, and the process will have a better bond around the edges and inside.

I talked to the guys from Cuba, MO Friday in Springfield at the swap meet. To blast, minor straightening and plate is around $350. I think I will do the mods to my front bumper and take it down to them. I'll be the test case. Will probably be late spring before I'm ready to take it down there.

He said they do a weekly pickup in the Walmart in Springfield's parking lot if you come from the north of Cuba.

I missed that before Steve.
I find it odd they don't do 1 piece bumpers there.
I used to send steel rollers for printing presses there to be copper plated.
