Slick 60's

Anyone re-shaped the back edge (cowl end) of their hood to match the cowl better?

My hood has good shape but it doesn't match the cowl shape at all. It is 1/2 to 3/4" narrower than the cowl at each of the back/bottom corners and it has more crown at the center than the cowl does. It sits 3/4" above the cowl at the center. Looks like it needs the bottom corners spread apart and the top back center to come down a bit.

Been considering using a port-a-power to push the bottom corners a bit farther apart and hope that brings the center down and removes a bit of the crown.

My other thought was to lay it on the concrete floor and step on the back edge to try and get it to go down some and hope that widens the bottom width at those back corners.

Anyone messed with this?

I had the exact opposite problem with mine. The sides were out further and the center was down. I used a ratchet strap wrapped around the hood and pulled the sides in and that brought the center of the hood up to where it was supposed to be.
So I think that your idea of the port-a-power will work.

I would not step on the back of the hood. Fir the hood 'dry' without hinges and see how it fits. The hinges may not be adjusted right. If the hood fits good without the hinges, you know where the problem is. If it is still out of shape, fit it without the hinges then install the hinges making sure they do no place any inward pressure on the hood. If the hood needs bending, I'd use a jack to spread the bottom edges and see if that corrects the bulge in the center. Check the back edge to see if it has been creased. If there is a crease, removing it may fix both issues. You may also have to stretch the metal some.

Hood fits exactly the same with no hinges. Tried with old hinges, new hinges and no hinges, no difference. Skin is perfectly smooth bare metal, no damage anywhere.

I'll try the port-a-power first. We'll see if it sucks the center down. It was my first thought and usually my first thought is "out there".

let me know how it goes sir. mine is the exact same. tall and narrow. lol

I've tracked mine down to the hinges. Put new Dennis Carpenter hinges on it and I don't think they sit right. My hood is actually 1/4" wider than my cowl without the hinges. With the hinges it's 3/4" narrower than the cowl. Getting one of Kevin's kits to fix he hinge issue. I'll keep you posted.

hoods are weak so imo are the hinges so if the hinges are not correctly or perfectly aligned its likely possible to be working the metal every time its opened and shut
no telling how many times over a 50+ year period
only extra bracing is along the front and back, not really much support

look at the bottom of a bumpside hood, fully braced, 2x the weight almost if your lifting it

i have said this before but Kevin came up with a very nice design

My hood fit "pretty good" and the hinges were in good shape....however...when I put one of Kevin's hood kits on it fit great. Even after "stupid" owner mistake putting it on the kit was a great upgrade.
