Maiden Voyage Today

Post by Gary Seymour »

It's been off the road for a long time, but I was able to drive my '62, legally, today. I am still on a high from it. It drove and stopped really well. It is such a good feeling to have an asset instead of a liability. I passed a sheriff on a county road, and glanced up - and it was then that I realized I hadn't put the rear view mirror on......

Way to Go, Gary! That had to be a GREAT feeling! :thumright:

Did you give it a once over when you got back to the house with it; check for leaks, fluid levels, re-torque the intake & exhaust manifolds, etc.
Did the heater make heat, did the fan blow, did the wipers wipe?

Man do I recall how good those first few drives are after your truck sits a little to long .....

Wow, thanks for the great replies, guys.

I did find a small coolant leak at the heater shut off valve. I tightened the hose clamp. I think it still needs some tranny fluid.

I put in a new fuel sending unit, but the gas gage still does not register. The dash lights do not light, but I know most, if not all of the bulbs are no good. The outside lights are all working right, as are the blinkers, high beams.

Wipers and fan work right.

I painted the mirror gray, like the dash, and put it up today.

I might drive it to work in the morning. :D

Try grounding the hot wire at the tank. If you gauge works it should go to full.

What makes you think it needs some tranny fluid? :dontknow:

If you do drive it to work, we'll need a full report on the "to n' frow voyage"..... :steering:

Check the ground to the dash, check the ground at the tank. If it still will not work check your under dash connections

Well, on the "to" trip, the turn signals decided to quit when I signaled to turn into the industrial park. I need to aim the headlights a little better.

Lot's of my buddies at work came out to check it out. One guy even waited for me to leave so he could hear it run. It is pretty loud with purple hornies out the sides ahead of the rear tires.

The trip home was on backroads and the truck handles and rides pretty decent. I like driving it.

The trans has a shift kit in it and I thought I set it up to "bang shift" a little better than it does, and under hard acceleration, it doesn't seem to want to upshift. The upshift condition seemed to improve on the home trip this afternoon, however. It could be fluid, it could be a shifter adjustment, possibly modulator, I just need to play with it.

So I'll need to fix the turn signals before I drive it again.

I actually like driving it. I'm going to try and use it a lot. :D

P.S.
Don't forget to come back here and tell us about your blinker fix, your fuel gauge fix and if your shifting issues straighten out. :thumright:

The blinkers was an easy fix tonight. Loose connection at the firewall plug. I meant to do the grounding checks with the gas gage, but it was a long @$$-bustin' day at work, and once I found the blinker problem I was ready for a cold Miller Lite and a shower. :burp:

I am thinking I'll drive it to work again in the morning. Some other guys want to see it. It's getting some attention. I am wanting to park it next to a '57 Chevy this one guy drives a lot. It's a non-finished black hot rod too. 8)

What kinda sucks is the mile long drive on the dusty gravel road I live on before I get to pavement. Not so bad in the morning, but in the afternoon it's really dusty. We need rain here!

By the way, thanks to everyone for the replies and tips and feedback.

Seriously, my truck would not be what it is without the help of the people on this site. Not that it's some Barrett Jackson show winner, or anything, but IT'S ON THE ROAD!

It's a far cry from done, but is a hot rod ever done?

Gary
glad to hear its finally back on the road and you can drive it to work.
you can work on the minor issues in your spare time now and decide how to finish it up the way you want
you are correct i think that they are never truly done
i have had mine so long its time to redo some things
always runs and rides good and always draws comments
