Needing some info / 390 into a 62

Post by slick4x4 »

I know the 61-64 trucks had the 292
It used the crossover tube and exhaust went out passenger side
Did FORD do that because steering box location ?
.....
I want to put a 390 in my 62 4x4 and wondering if I have to swap
A later steering box in ....
.....
I have a 1970 4x4 truck for parts (steering box & colum)
....
I prefer to use the original... Didn't know if room was an issue
.....
Getting ready to do this, didn't want to waste my time if it has to go

I've put them in 2wd's with no problem; not sure of any differences on the 4wd, but wouldn't think so, since they used the same basic setup for the later FE's. If you are going with the side engine mounts, just be sure to maintain the original drivetrain offset; otherwise it WILL be an issue! I'm not sure of whether they were used on the lighter trucks, but I have 292 f350's with the rams horns and dual exhaust, so I don't believe that was a factor in the use of that grab-handle crossover!

Since I am just going back to the transfer case with a short driveshaft
Probably not a huge concern as a 2wd

NEED TO CHECK Oil Pan clearance,,,,, that's why 4x4 pans are different than 2wd

Pretty much a potential issue on any of 'em as far as driver's side clearances! I would think even more so on the 4x4, and Tom is certainly correct; if not making a "high boy" imitation, you WILL need the 4x4 pan and pickup.

to do factory type bolt in, requires cast iron timing chain cover in order to use front motor mount, then requires bell hsg with ears for rear mount just a thought maybe someone already knows, I THINK that f600ish trucks with an fe will have parts your going to be looking for

FE from a 4x4 should be a drop-in. The offset will be correct using the FE stands and mounts. We have put long tube headers on 65/66 4x4, so I would anticipate no exhaust fitment problems. The offset, or lack of same, becomes more of an angularity problem with shorter shafts as well as potential clearance issues. Again, taking everything from an FE equipped 4x4 slick should eliminate any issues.
