Differences in 351w harmonic balancers

Post by 64 f100 »

I am having a hard time lining up the pulleys on my grandsons 351 and I'm beginning to think it may be the harmonic balancer I use. I did not look at the part number on the balancer but it has something on it that was not on the originals ones. The balancer has an extra piece on the engine side that looks to be for a sensor , this part has four ears sticking out of it and I'm guessing this for some kind of magnetic pickup, which would indicate that it is for a much later 351. The pulleys I have are DOOE 70 part numbers. I've noticed there must be some change in the alter style balancers as there seems to be a split sometime in the eighties. Any comments or knowledge anyone have?
Thanks,
Rich

Save some time and money. Go straight to this balancer.

Get a 28oz imbalance. It has 3 hole and 4 hole bolt patterns. Used these for years and they are so much easier to work with.

It also has spacers available separately if you need them. Spacers are only for the 4 bolt pulleys.

Thanks, I have done some research and there are about 3 different balancers for the 351w as far as I can tell. Somewhere in my pile there is the correct one , finding it is a real problem though. Spent all day at an auction today, until it started raining. Bought 4 radiators a NOS drivers side fender with a little rust on the end, a pile of 302 351w timing covers, a Hollander interchange manual, a box of carburetor clips, and spent 345$. I left before I wanted to as there was a pile of 4 speed and 3 speed shifters I wanted. Lots of good sale stuff including an 84 Corvette that went for 500$. Looked like a decent car from what I saw. There was a lot of stuff still, but I would have had a semi if I bought all of it, both to haul it home and have someplace to store it. The old man that owned the salvage yard was most likely spinning in his grave. I hope he was, he was impossible to deal with. He had NOS Ford parts but would not show me any of them and this went on for several years before I got to see or buy any of it. He was a piece of work. His grand daughter told me he was mean to her and only started being nice when he got old senile and didn't know anything.
