FNG from Texas

Post by agjames96 »

Glad to be here. Just met another member this morning to buy some parts and he told me about the group!

Wanted a '65 C10 like the one I had in high school, but found a '63 flareside that was too good to pass up. All original... maybe even to the bias ply tires that area all flat. Has a sticker on the back window that states "Property of the Tulsa Airport Authority", so I imagine that it spent a lot of its life there.

Looking forward to learning about Slicks and hopefully contributing when I can.

Here are some pics:

agjames:  welcome.gif Other than a few bumps to bang out, looks pretty solid! (and I'll take bumps over rust any day:)
You should check the vin , because I'm seeing a couple things that are leading me to think it may not be a '63.

Is the roof smooth, or are there a couple of bead lines towards the center running front to back? '
61 to '63, smooth Roof, '64 to '66 had the lines

Front bumper looks to have only two bolts per side (may just be the angle of pic?)
'61 to 63 had three bolts per side

The roof line says it couldn't be 63... same with the dash trim piece or gauge panel. 64 and newer I'd think. Just has a 63 grill.

Flareside Friday!

A lot of government truck were titled as to date put in service, so a 64 before 12-31-63 would likely be listed as a 63

F'n new guy.

The sequential production number is in the 500k range, which should be '64. I was confused about

that, but assumed '63 because of grille.

Grille is a quick way to gage the year, but the grille is also easily changed:)

So, Two bolts/side bumper, lines in roof, and the custom cab door panel inserts (which IIRC started in '64?) all point to '64, and if you've looked at the the vin range to compare to yours, that pretty much tells the story.

Interesting to see the truck from my area. My dad was a career private pilot for an oil company and TUL was his base airport. He learned to fly there as a 14 yr old boy. It was a grass field in those days!
Welcome and enjoy your slick.

I noticed there was no tailgate, Do you have one?
I recently picked up a complete tailgate from a 63 flareside. I also grabbed the parts that were attached to the bed for the gate to lower. I have the chains and all.

Flareside Friday!
Welcome! As longcab stated; in-service date is often the determining factor for many government purchased vehicles. Kevin Stone's beautiful '63 has the higher cab roof. If replacement parts were ordered based on the in-service date a '63 grille might have been ordered. What surprises me is a government-purchased Custom Cab. Full interpretation of the warranty plate might prove revealing,, especially the DSO codes. A later '64 cab will have the self-positioning door hinges; which I would expect on this vehicle.

Spent all weekend working on her. She is now running. Last registered in 1996, so not sure how long she was sitting. Here's a link to "Proof of Life":

Was it running when you got it? It appears to be running smooth now. It always floors me that some guy pick them up after sitting for 20 years. Fresh gas, maybe plugs and points and they will fire right up. Many times its just fresh gas and a battery and they roar to life.
