Looking for pictures of under dash A.C. mounting brackets

Post by Jerry T »

Does anyone have pictures of the under dash air conditioner and mounting brackets for a slick? I have a 66 mustang unit that I am replacing the Thermo king that was in the truck with. Years ago I saw one that instead of the L shaped brackets had some that kinda followed the shape of the dash.

I put a Mustang unit in my 64 Sprint and fabricated some brackets. They have worked flawlessly. I am getting ready to do the same thing to my 65, I am looking for a 65, 66 Mustang unit to put in it.

That is what I am going to do. I just would like to see some pictures of something than the universal L shaped brackets.

Here is what I have came up with so far. I am not sure if I like it or not.

Being brutally honest....
If you want opinions.....
That don't look to good to me

I had a similar unit in a 72 ... It was up tight against the dash
But it was attached to sides of the unit

I can't put it any closer to the dash because of the controls for the delux heater. If I move it to the right to clear the controls it will be under the glove box. That is why I asked for pictures of other trucks with under dash a.c. units.

Can the heater controls be moved ?
I'm thinking that would be a simple mod

They could, but there had to be plenty of trucks made with the delux heater and air. It would be nice to know what the dealers did about it.

Jerry, the only thing I would suggest is find the coin tray that a lot of the Mustang evaporator units had and once you paint the support bracket I think it will look OK. I have been grappling with installing the same evaporator unit in my 65.

Honestly, it looks like crap. BUT!!! You have room for improvement. Re-paint everything you can. before you do, make a custom face, "Cover Plate" that goes from one end to the other. You have the bolt attachments that will hold a custom "Cover Plate"
Be creative, use what you have. Like most custom upholstery shops, learn to cover what does not look right. Paint parts to blend in.
You'll be surprised what you can accomplish with a little imagination.

Look, you hung this unit on your own. Your brackets are your design. Just clean everything up, then disassemble and paint dash, brackets and cover plate all at once. Things will blend you just have to think outside the box a bit.

Good luck and keep posting pictures.

Michelle, The brackets on my unit were the same as yours before I cut them, they would work fine if not for the heater controls. The cab had air on it with the controls like they are, but it and the radiator were stolen before I bought the truck. I bought it from the original owners granddaughter. She remembers the unit, says it was the mustang style, but doesn't remember the brackets. I saw one a long time ago, but haven't been able to find it again. I am trying to keep it looking somewhat factory looking.

My biggest obstacle right now is the New Process four speed transmission, the shifter has to go before I can think of installing the under dash unit. I have a C-6 and just about everything I need to change the transmission out. I will probably get serious about changing it out after the first of the year.

It can be fun trying to get around obstacles. That is why I threw that bracket together. I had to start somewhere. There is no telling how many I will end up making or what the finished product will look like.

After I could not find any help here, I kept looking and finally found an actual factory bracket. I was close on what I had pieced together.
