best rear end gear,352 4 speed granny low trans?

Post by foodstick »

I was just wondering if anyone ever found the perfect rear end ratio to use with the 352, 4 speed "granny low" first gear.. First is so low you could take off with ANYTHING in the pumpkin ! hahahahh

Who was it that was making nearly 20 mpg in there 352 powered truck to Slick Stock 1?

Always made me cringe listening to dads poor truck wind at highway speeds....

Not sure what gear ratio it had...
But my dads 70 F250 must have had some tall gears
Had a 360 in it with an automatic
I'm not lying... you could shift it out of first at 50 mph
And hit a 100 in second
It NEVER got over 10 mile per gallon
I have no idea how that thing lasted thru my brother & me

I like the 4.10 im my 352 65 F-250. The 1.75:1 3rd gear is perfect for my use. Living in the city I can roll 10 mph around cormers in 3rd with out a strain and it gets a load movimg. Ford knew what they were doing when they set up the 352/4 speed/Dana 60 drive line.

Not 20 mpg yet, no overdrive. 16.5 mpg @ 60 mph was the best I ever got. It is too easy to run 80 with traffic but miliage typically drops to 13.3-13.4 mpg.

My '66 f100 camper special has close to a 3.00 ratio, 352 and 4 spd. I got between 16 and 18 MPG at 65-70 mph driving it cross country. Moves just fine starting in second and I only use first for towing or pulling out a tree.

Those are some positive numbers... The 352 4 speed spicer gets about 13 in My Pops ole 66 ... but its a brute... The transmission was out of a bigger truck than a pickup...but I am not sure its different than every other 4 speed they used.

The F600 used the same 4 spd as the pickups
Only difference I noticed was a brake drum on the tail shaft for a parking brake
I put one in a pickup & hooked the parking brake lever up to it .. worked great

Its a dang shame someone never invented a simple two speed gear box that could be installed in the drive shaft.. Short shaft from the transmission to the box, longer shaft to the rear end. Even if you had to stop and manually throw the thing from high to low it would be great.. especially if it could be sold at a fair price.

Ranger overdrives have been around for years. Cheaper than that 9" overdrive.
