Disc brake conversion and stock wheels?

Post by Jhaas63 »

Hey all,

I have been looking at doing a disc brake upgrade on my 63. I have stock steel wheels. The kit I want to use is the Speedwak kit. Does anyone know if I can still run the stock wheels if I upgrade to disc up front?

I did the upgrade on my '64 and ran stock 15x7 wheels on the front...no problem. The kit is excellent, well worth the price and will make a world of difference in braking. Later went to 17 x8 Dodge Ram wheels and then back to 15 x 8 Wheel Vintiques steelies. All fit over the discs and calipers without any issues.

I don't think 15 x 7 is stock for our trucks.

A 15 x 6 wheel I have, which does work with discs, is 14 1/2" diameter where the caliper would be. That measurement is taken about 1" from where the wheel contacts the hub and remains about the same to the outside of the wheel. Within that 1", it does taper smaller. Compare this to your wheel and you should get some idea.

You are right about the stock wheels... I forgot that the 15x7's came from an early 90's F-150.

Wheels may be smaller than 15x6, could be 16x5.5

In the parts book, it looks like the 15" wheel is 5.5" wide for '64. If you have 16" wheels, then that makes it more likely that it will fit, given the larger diameter. Either way, you can use the dimensions I provided of a wheel that does fit to get a good idea if the ones you have will or not. If they don't, wheels that look correct and do fit are cheap and readily available, new or used. Wheels really are a small issue when it comes to the common disc upgrades.
