Dana 44 19 spline to 30 spline conversion?

Post by aj64f100390-292 »

I've been trying to find out more about my Dana 44 rear end out of a 61 f-100, its likely 1 3.92"1 but its a locker. I read online that the 60s Dana 44s are 19 spline. I need 3.33s or what ever Dana has compared to the 9 inches 3.25s in my truck now. So I;m needing a affordable 2.72-3.73 locker carrier...they sell them for the 19 spline but they are 800 bucks and those are what I found plenty 3.92s and up 19 spline aftermarket lockers. but I don't need brand new necessarily as I'm not drag racing the truck on a regular basis if I ever do. just a quiet 3.33 locker to keep my fuel mileage until I get an overdrive transmission. The reason we got this Dana with leaf springs and a front axle is that it was what was in the truck new and when dad got it..until one day it started making noise and before he could get the truck home it sheered off the carrier bolts and my nine inch is out of a 76 f100 in a cheap way to accept the 90s dodge rims we have on the truck. And people seem to think nine inch parts of any kind are gold, even though we love the 9 inch, we are hoping we can get what we are wanting cheaper with the Dana 44. So hopefully their is a someone fairly knowledgeable with Dana rear ends here who will chime in.

As always thanks in advance

I just went through this on my 66 Jeep cj5 with a Dana 44. I had previously purchased a 19 spline power lok for it. I then found a 30 spline heaver duty 44 rear axle. Here is what you need to do to make it work. Not sure what your spline count is but this sequence should be the same for different spline counts?

1/ buy a ( what your spline count )spline spider gear / cup set for the power lok you can find them on e-bay. Just verify that your will interchange.
2/ The posi clutches will work with either ( keep track of the way they come out side to side)
3/ The carrier bearings for the 19 spline have a smaller ID than the 30 spline (what mine was ) but the outer race is the same
4/ Buy a set of donor bearings for the carrier since the shims are between the bearing and the carrier. Sand the bearing ID so you can slip them on and off while setting the backlash.
5/ When you take the pinion out keep track of the shims there is a set behind the bearing race ( one closest to the carrier) to set the pinionbearing height.
6/ There area some shims used in the early ones in the pinion to set the bearing crush ( instead of the later ones that use a crush sleeve) keep track of them.
7/ I bought a kit with all the bearings / seals for the Dana 44 i used a 19 spline kit since my carrier was a 19 spline i used with 30 spline rear axles

Hopefully this helps maybe more than you wanted to know !!!!

Its not too bad just take your time
