what will fit?

Post by Anthony »

OK guys, trying to help a Slickster in KY get a better gear in his rear. '64 F250. So if I go to the yard to look, what rear ends will fit his 2WD 64 F250? he is looking to just swap out rear ends, 8 lug... will the dentside 8 lug F250 rear ends fit the width of the 64's and be a direct bolt in or is it gonna have to be an early rear? he is looking for a 3:55 or a 3:08 gear.. what do I need to look for?

A 3.08 with a DNE2/US Gears underdrive would be a good combonation.

My 61 had a 5.13 rear gear, when I got it. It now has a Dana from a bump side with 3.54 gears. I have a Dana 61 with 3.07 gears from a 80's I hope to install before SS. On a side note, the early 70' rear bolted in the same mounting and no width issues. The 80's will need new spring perches at the appropriate width and is approximately an 1 1/4" wider over all, or 3/4" per side...

I have been told to avoid van rears for width issues. But the closer you stay to the 60's the more of a bolt in it will be.

Anthony rear end can go all the way back to the 50's, go into the 67/72 series trucks since a lot was 3.54's BUT after that from 73 and up the rear end can only be switched by changing the perches BUT BEFORE To take the original perches off check the rear end angle on the degrees so that the new one is the same degree and also be sure you have tire clearance is there as well,, ALL 48-72 trucks on the F-2/250 Series have a 34" frame rail and then after 73-79 2wd trucks went to a 37" frame UNLESS IT'S a 73 to early 77 4x4 truck or crew cab in those years it will be a 34" frame rail, then after mid 77 4x4 trucks went to 37" frame rail.. early 77 4x4 trucks had divorce transfer case and power assist where later 77 trucks had the married case with a regular power steering box
