We could send over some Cane Toads to help get rid of that Kudzu, they did bugger all to get rid of the sugar cane beetle!.

Alan/Pat: Sure I'll be glad to send some...if I can find them. I'll check the local markets to see if they're available here. (I've never cooked them, only eaten them in restaurants in South Louisiana.) If I can't find them here I can contact my friends in the N.O. area.
As far as growing them, my research shows you don't plant seeds. The seeds germinate inside the fruit so you must plant the entire fruit. Another problem with growing them is most of what you find in the U.S. now are grown in Costa Rica at altitudes of more than 3,500 feet, which apparently do not grow well here. Most of the Louisiana Mirliton's (the majority of which were grown in backyard gardens and had been for more than 200 years) were wiped out during the one, two punch of Katrina and then Gustav. There is an effort underway to resurrect these "heirloom" plants.
Maybe Pat has a "green thumb" (like my Grandmother, who could root a toothpick :-)) and make anything grow.
BTW: Pat, how much rain did you get? Enough to make a difference?
If you understand what you’re doing, you’re not learning anything.

Gerald, Your right about the way they germinate( I think!), the only way I've seen them grown, is by planting a sprouting fruit in a shallow hole, on their side with the vine sprout facing up. They will die back each season, but will come back for 3 or 4 years with the same plant, they are a very tough plant as mine are starting to grow again!, so the chooks may have shade after all!

so this is not like a squash that you plant every year....
it grows year after year... if i am reading this correctly
but what about the harsh Kansas winters ?
it get below zero here during the winter....

total of about 2.5 inches of rain
the soybeans & milo are really looking healthy now
but the ground was so dry we will need more to make a crop
but at this time its looking good ! :D

:hm: Is that zero/c or zero/f ?, I`d say that you may have to replant every year!, and like every thing else!, if you get it in early enough, you should get a good crop!. I've had these things growing in my yard on a paling fence, a chicken wire fence and even out houses, once the flower germinates, you`ll be eating it in about 10 to 14 days, some times they just over run you with fruit. A good vine will give you up to 10 a day!, so I hope all the family will like them!

Welcome to SPRING! The "unstable weather season"

Boy, this is an old post revival (August 2011) but it reminds me I never followed through on trying to get some Mirliton's for Pat to try.

About 6 weeks ago the wind blew relentlessly for about 10 days straight
Then we got some VERY. Warm weather ... broke a record in western Kansas
Hit 91* ... WAY too hot at the time
Then yesterday it got down to 11* here ...too cold !
We are in a drought... which is actually a good thing for wheat farmers
The wheat was so small & underdeveloped ... the freeze didn't damage it much
But we are gonna need a good amount of rains for a decent crop

I think men must be much more organized than women
Father Time never gets mixed up
But mothe nature ? .....
She's all over the place
