Talked to a glass shop and the owner gave me some butl rubber strips for free. If it doesn't work, he told me to glue it in.

Got a big box of parts from DC in the mail today. Brake cables, shifter collar, driver arm rest and some door handle pieces. Expecting 8" of snow tonight/tomorrow. Of course I have to work.

Will work on a few things and start sanding that steering wheel.

We are getting dumped on with snow. I had the heat on in the garage but damn I am still frozen. I am inside now cooking some chow and warming my frozen feet up. I spent my morning sanding and hand polishing the aluminum windshield trim.

The previous owner had taken a sander to the cab and ended up knocking into the trim causing gouges.

Image

The top piece in this pic is from original anodized/paint covered, scratched and gouged.
The middle and bottom pieces I had already started sanding. Went from 180, 220, 320, 400, 600 here.

Image

I eventually went 800, 1000, 1500 and 2,000. With a hand polish with Mothers Mag and Aluminum paste.

The top one resting on red part of dash was finished in Mothers. The bottom piece is how it looked when I started.

The clips

Done with Mothers Polish

Image
There are some imperfections like this gouge. It was way worse before I started.

Image
One here has a ding in the middle. But it's good enough! I had thought of just powder coating these a fake chrome color... we will see how it all looks later.

Image
Up next... the steering wheel sanding. The epoxy putty is hardened now so it's time to clean that up.

Today I spent a lot of time shoveling the snow-ice outside. Had a pipe freeze so I spent time working on that, the. Went to work and made some "grown men" cry.

Got ho,e and started working on the grill.

Had two cans of the yellow top easy off oven cleaner so I sprayed the grill down.

Anodizing needs to come off!.

Image

Used the spare bathroom shower for this since it's so cold out. Sprayed the grill down and let it sit for 45 minutes,

Image

The anodizing fluffed off and washed right down.

Image

Decided I needed to do a little better job at the light sockets I grabbed my spot blaster and blasted the black paint out of the light sockets.

Image
Like life, you can't go 50 years without a few dings, dents and scars.

Brought it inside to work on while I watched tv.
Here it is with anodizing removed

Sanded to 180
Image
Sanded to 400.
Image

I got 1/3 of it to 600 before it was Quiting time.
I spent about 2.5 hours so far sanding this thing.
Have time tomorrow to do some more spot blasting and sanding,

Will sand this to 2000 as well. And paint the black areas again with a Satin color black. I thought about red but might just do black.

Looks great April. You're doing a great job with that, I've done the same to mine with pretty good results. Here's a link to an article that I found on the HAMB that helped me. Check it out....This guy did the same with fantastic results. Hope this helps.

Also you can work the dents and dings out from the back of the piece with a small block of wood and a hammer. Just put the wood on the back of the dent and lightly hammer it a little at a time till the ding is gone. Some of my side trim pieces were 'beat-up' and I was able, with patience, to work some of the dents out.

Screw it, I'm leaving the dents. You can't get 50+ years without a dent or two. (I did try to push those small dents out and couldn't get them to budge.)

I wasn't pleased with finding some anodizing in hard to reach areas. Shoulda just sand blasted the whole thing first time around. I did today (took 10 minutes to blast it). Painted some primer on the areas I want to paint black. Taped off those areas for a nice straight line and will hit the grill with some sanding tonight. Too cold in garage still. Tomorrow is due to be 40 outside and I don't have to be in till 1300.

Pictures to follow. Starting at 220 and moving on up.

I spent way too much time on this grill and I still need to do touch up where the black paint ran around tape.

It's sanded to 2000 by hand. I taped off and painted the black area with a rustolliem semi-gloss.

Rained and sleet all day. I was doing stuff all day out of town but I did work on the grill a little in the early hours

Image

Used a Mothers power cone to shine it up.

I stripped the driver wing window and prepping for installation. Painted semi-flat black.

Image

Tomorrow finish the wing window. Finish the steering wheel. Buff the dash. Windshield install on Monday.

Rebuilt my wing windows. I'm not happy with the passenger one though. May order a new channel. It had a lot of rust, it was hard to get the window tape to set and it it bent weird.

Image

The glass didn't sit well enough in the channel. It's rubbing when I open it. Need those small rivet-bushings that are in the rubber seal. Mine were missing.

Put new handles on too.
Image

I cleaned the garage a bit after and cut the top of the dash.

Image

I had sanded to 1500 in the top of dash cause I called up to get the window installed tomorrow. I set that up weeks ago and will just go ahead and do it. Though I would like to wait a little longer. I can't wait too much longer. Need to be able to get the truck mobile.
There are sand scratches, there are blemishes. These i can live with.

Now here I may be too picky or just did a shit job in painting.

Back of cab wassanded to 1500. I practiced back there first before I took the buffer to the dash. Anyway.. from a few feet away...
Image

When I put a flashlight up to it and zoom in...

Image
Orange peel.

I need to sand more, but I'm getting nervous about hitting base. I am just being picky. I think.
Anyway, tomorrow I will sand some more.

Btw- not a fan of the steering g wheel patch job I did. Some is good and hard, some I can leave a fingernail impression in. I put the steering wheel in the house where it's a constant 66*. It may be salvageable, but then again it might. It be. Bummer.

Stand by for the ongoing chronicles of the shipwreck.

I wonder what caused the filer to dry so unevenly? Possibly thicker in some spots but I would think it would have all dried by now. Was it a 2 part epoxy you mixed up and could the hardener not have gotten in some of it?

I did a bit more wet sanding today. Enough that my first bit says I did 10 miles even though I was stationary standing precariously on a wet frame rail.

I pushed truck outside into the sun to check the peel.

Image

Yup, still there. It was bothering me.

Sanded more to 2000. This is with water on it.
Image

Got working on the doors And the driver door had this weird stripe in the base,

I had to sand down thru clear to base. Will reshoot clear on the door.
Image

Not all a bad day. Even sprayed my pedals.

I've had epoxy filler that didn't cure well. Usually comes down to not enough hardner or not mixed well enough.

You've shamed me into getting to work. Just ordered $250 worth of body supplies from Eastwood because of your posts.

Thanks for all your sharing, really enjoy your attitude and ability to step up and try new things. Great job!

Stayed up to 3am this morning working on paint issues. I was not satisfied with the blend of the door so I removed the door this morning and sanded some of the clear off. I had some burnt hrough areas and it didn't blend well.

Image

Okay, fast forward 3 hours to 0630, I got up (cause pups gotta potty). Anyway. I farted around the garage a little but ended up getting the polish equipment out. I cut and buff the interior of the cab, and ended up moving on to the exterior too.

This is top of roof.

Getting the glass back in was always a great milestone for me during my builds...

I used astronaut's sharpie technique for color sanding on my last paint job.. It worked great.

Super rainy today and I was at work 4 hours more than planned.

Attempted to get my window regulators operating. No luck. One moves 1" and binds up. Will not turn at all. The other is moving but sounds like flattened ball bearings and the crank is wobbling in there.

Image

Scrap them!
Ordered two more from Carolina Classics.

Took apart the fresh air vents. Drilled out the rivets and pulled the britte rubber sheet.
Sand blasted the vents and primed. Got them in rustoleum gloss black.

Image
Was farting around on here at 0200 last night and saw an idea of using a mouse pad as the rubber gasket.
They are 2 for 5$ at a local store so I bought 2. You could put to on one pad but I didn't know that at first, plus I cut them a tad wider. Rubber gasket material costs twice that around here for the cheap stuff.

Image
Will rivet them together tomorrow morning. Hope it works.

Tomorrow I hope to paint the driver door again. It should never nice enough to put truck outside so I can paint in garage.

Michelle--- I think "quiet as a mouse" is more like it. God forbid I get mice in my cab again. They ate the seat material out of the old set up.

Stay tuned for more. Hope to get lots done today.
