Engine Swap Question

Post by stronger66ratfink »

Not for me Tom!
got sucked in to helping someone!

he's got a 64 with the original 292 Y block with the original 4 speed
on the floor I assume!

and he want to remove the 292 and replace it with a 302?

my answer was, so long as you get the bell housing, clutch, pressure plate, etc. with the 302

his original 4 speed will bolt up to it???

Yes?
No!

if no! what 4 speed will work behind the 302?
I know there is some body still left out there and not at PATE!

I think you have to do something different for front motor mounts as well, like a conversion crossmember.

Good reading material, might help.

Not sure if a truck 4 spd has the same bolt pattern as a car 4 spd. Motor mounts & crossmember will be an issue as well.

Truck 4 speed is a different bolt pattern than a car 4 speed if I remember correctly.

The Y-block 4 speed is a different bolt pattern than the 302 so it won't bolt up. Any 4 speed, or 5 speed originally hooked to a windsor will bolt up until the change over in late 90's.

The 302 requires crossmember and mount installs but not hard. You can check the 302 5-speed swap we did on my sons 64 at the link below for what it entailed. His was originally a 3 on the tree so your buds will be easier as far as the floor already set up for floor shift. viewtopic.php?f=32&t=32284.

Hope that helps.
