The 406 was an original race motor in about '61-62. It should have the hipo heads with bigger valves but it would also have the early motor mount bolt pattern and solid lifters if I remember correctly. It was replaced by the 427 in '63.

Bore is the same as a 428 but the stroke is the same as a 390. Kind of backwards from a 410. It should be a cross bolt block if it was a later block, earlier ones were not always cross bolted.

If you can get one, get it. They bring some fairly big money.

AS a rule that I was reading a long time ago when I first built my 427,, 406's where not cross-bolted, UNTIL they started coming apart and a kit was offered to change that over to that until the 427's came out and ALL 427's are cross-bolted, IF somebody says it's a 427 and not cross-bolted then they are telling you a lot of :bs: 427's where offered until 1968 and the 68 motors where hyd. lifters,, my 427 is serial # from Ford

You are 100% correct as usual, Tom. The only cross bolted 406 were the end of the run until the 427 came out. They are very rare.

Joe, if it is indeed a 406, there are some collectors that will pay (in my opinion) way more than they are worth. The Galaxie guys drool over them. There is a guy in the Omaha area that buys a lot of them.

Joey.
If you decide that isn't a 406, let me know and I'll come get it.

Seriously, the casting number on the block C3AE-6013-Z is for a 427 top oiler. What is the casting number on the heads. Those are not 427 exhaust manifolds, or 406's either.
Strange days indeed.http://www.fordification.com/tech/castingnumbers-FEblock.htm

IF somebody says it's a 427 and not cross-bolted then they are telling you a lie which in this case it's not a 427 since I do not see the cross bolts right above the oil pan
