switching tires on a Gran Marquis from 16" to 17"

Post by tomrooster »

Daughter's car has a bad rim and needs 2 new tires, she has 16" . I found set of 4 alloy wheels off similar car with 17" tires for sale . So the speedometer would be off maybe affect anti lock brakes anything else it might screw up. Thanks Tom

It's not the size of the wheel but the diameter of the tire that would affect the speedometer. Compare the 16s with the 17's and see what the difference is http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-calculator/

Agreed, you'll need to compare the tire diameters.

If the offset of the wheel is significantly different it could cause some clearance issues. This could apply if the cars are from different generations.

And if the car is equipped with stability control I could see that being affected somewhat, but that may only be an issue if you end up with staggered tire widths or diameters front-to-back. That is, if the 17" tires were taller/wider and you only used them on the back.

Found this on Crown Vic tire sizes http://www.sizemytires.com/make/ford/crown-victoria

If the 16" tires are 225/60/16=26.6"
If the 17" tires are 235/55/17=27.2"

I doubt that 0.6" difference in tire height will make much difference in anything. Like The Big M said, there may be a difference in the offset of the rims that you'll need to look at for potential clearance issues, etc.

The 17" tires and wheels are from a 2004 Town Car and the daughters is a 2004 Gran , they look the same backspacing and the bolt circle is the same and worst that could happen I would have to put them on the wife's 2010 Gran. 450 asking price seems reasonable with almost new name brand tires. I think I'm going to try to make a deal. Thanks Tom
