Timing light repair

Post by 64 f100 »

I have two timing lights and both are not working. The little bar that that makes contact on the inductive clamp is broken on both. Should be an easy repair if I can figure out what to replace the bar with. I had assumed it was some kind of brittle carbon of some sort but everything I've tried has not worked. Anyone know what the stuff is or what it can be replaced with?

Thanks,
Rich

Not sure what it is... unless they are something special, I'd just get a new one. Or contact the manf. to see if they offer repair services.
Good luck

Seeing as I bought both of these used and in working order, it may not be that important to save these. However, from what I'm seeing it should be an easy fix , if I can find out what exactly the black material used is. There may be something else I can use in place of what was there. What is aggravating, was that I could have had a new timing light for a couple of bucks at a fund raiser not long ago.

I'm a cobbler of old stuff , that most people throw away

If I was going to try something , without buying anything
I would get a extra spark plug wire with a wire core
Strip the insulation off a bit of it
Then hook the wire from the light to it....
It might work... Or it might fry it...
Or it might shock the snot out of me

That kinda stuff keeps a guy on his toes :D

I'd do that before trash-canning it..... But that's just me :burp:

Ferrite core ? Heard of the stuff , didn't know it was used in timing lights. After googling it, I'm uncertain on how to buy some of it? As usual, when looking up something you are not familiar with, it seems the people are talking in a foreign language. I have trouble enough with the English we speak, and I can sometimes spell and sometimes not so well.
