351w starter and headers preoblem and T5 speedo gear

Post by 64 f100 »

I bought a set of 351w block hugger headers for my grandsons truck as this was what Sanderson suggested will work. Only problem was the passenger side hits the starter . The header hits the starter, which is the 2 bolt style. I've looked at the starters on evilbay which have the built in solenoid , but wondering how I would hook this up since I have the fender mount solenoid. I think that by hooking the positive side to direct to the starter activation side and using my present solenoid for starting as original it should work. Any questions, suggestions or drawbacks?

I am installing a T5 behind the 351w, and have a 3.73 rear end in the truck. Tires will be larger than stock 15 inch, just tires not rims. The transmission has the green gear in it and ma wondering how this will work out with the stock speedometer. Will this work out close to reading what the speedo should with the right mating gear for the cable and if so which gear?

Merry Christmas and Happy New year,

Hi 64
You can run the main cable to the starter as normal and run a trigger wire from the fender mounted one to the starter solenoid or Just install a short jumper from the big terminal on the starter to the little trigger terminal on the starter solenoid. Late model 302's used a smaller fender mount one in series with the one on the starter. I use both on 351 W longer tube header motor in Cas

We always ran the small gear reduction starters on our 351W race engines because of the higher compression and heat. Just a short jumper wire from the big terminal to the small one like Ken talks about works great. I'm using one on my 390 because headers are so close.

Thanks guys for this information. This is what I thought, but it's always good to have verification. I had installed a smaller starter on the engine than the one that the headers hit, but way to close to the positive terminal hookup. Could probably run it or modify where the cable mounts , but just don't like the way it looks nor the close proximity to all the heat from the headers, although those are ceramic coated. which helps. How do you like your Sanderson headers?

Still need info on what the transmission gear should be on theT5. Would rather fix it now before it is completely all together.

I really like the way the Sandersons are built. Nice and heavy.

The starters I use are clockable so you can rotate the motor body and get it away from the header and where the cables are safe. We ran them for years on our dirt modifieds and they held up great.

Got to digging around and found a smaller starter with the outside solenoid and will install that as soon as the snow goes away. I Believe it was from an 81 model car or truck with 302.

We used to use those in race cars until we started running higher compression (over 12:1). They work well.

Rich, Get a white speedo gear, Ford carries them. I'm running the same gear and " normal" tires and it is as near to spot on as it gets !

Thanks to all and special thanks to Fanatic for the speedo question, but want to ask which gear are you running in the transmission? Yellow or Green?

I think it is green but not sure of that
