Cab Dolly

Post by 6166 Junkyard Dog »

Since some will be doing Cab Off or pull the cab here is a inexpensive way to keep your cab oof the floor and roll around
Tools:
Chop Saw
Die Grinder
Disc Grinder with plenty of Disc's
Welder
Square
Soap Stick
Material Needed and Cost
2" C-Channel 30',,, 2" Angle Iron 3',, 2 Flat Stock 4', 1" Square Tubing 4', Now all that steel is based on how high you want the cab to sit off the side supports. Mine I built it as 8" off the bottom support, if higher the little mores quare tubing & angle Iron is needed,, COST For Material 80.00
Large Wheels that turn in all directions 103.85
Paint 5.00

I cut 2 63" C-Channels,, 3 48" C-Channels,,, 2 24" C-Channels,, 2 15" C-Channels.. The 63" goes the width of cab from door to door and the 2 48" goes from front cab mount to back of cab.., The 3rd 48" C-Channel is for the center of the dolly to give more support so will not flex,, Now the 24" channels are the front of the cab support while the 15" c-channels goes to the back.. I just spaced 8" high since all we do with these dollies are to move cabs around here or load them inside our trailere and move them around at the swap meets,, I start with one side and just square all around till I come to last one welding one corner at a time,, Then start with a corner 1 at a time, then the braces at top ,, I leave a big enough space since the cab will rest on top braces and space is for the center cab braces to fit in there.. No when I biuld these they are Set Up to fit any cab of a Ford Truck from 1957 to 1996.. The Square Tubing is to support the braces where the actuall cab will be supported,, Then Flat stock I cut at a 45 degree angle to fit in the C-Channels so you have a plce to weld the wheels on the inside and the weld wheels to the edges but leaving enough so you have a place to weld
Total Cost I have is around 200.00 when figuring the wire for welder, gas and etc.. Time wise took me about 6 hours since this is my 4th I have made.. In the below pictures I have not done center brace yet or finish welding in my 45 degree angle to the C-Channnel,, going with a 3" C-Channel since we run straps to this and need a little extra support

Tom.
Nice job.
But if you don't have a welder and your skill with a welder, there is another way.
I used 4 x 4's as legs, 2 x 6's for the top rails and 2x4 bottom rails.
Dimensions are 30 wide x 48" long x 20" (plus the height of the casters) high.
I then cut 90 triangles with 12" sides for each corner, top and bottom to keep things true.
All screwed together with 3" deck screws.
I got the 4" casters from Northern Tool.
The one I built is big enough for the cab and the bed. I also use it for a lot of other things.
I'll post a picture later.

Highboy.
That is exactly what I built.
Works great.
If I could weld like Tom, I'd have made one out of steel.
I'm still learning my MIG and my welds look like a dirt dobber made his home in them......

Uncle Skip I like the wood  ,, might be great if using treated wood last a lot longer on holding up against the weather if you have to leave outside OR Say when you want to wet sand the Cab,, Another Good thing you can always replace a section of wood easier than welding,,

As far as my welding skills they are OK at times I wish I can have a nice garage intsead of doing it in the driveway sometimes the wind can be a factor when welding outside or rain,, Thats one of our down faults we have to work everday out in the yard, driveway or way in the back cornern nothing comes easy and one of are problems is I have a garage with my 56 in it but 3 trucks in front of the door that will be hard to move,, So anyway we keep going along

Yup if I had a mig tig I would have made one of steel stock myself. Heck I still have to learn to weld with wire feed It cant be any harder than gas weld. That wasnt to hard to learn.

I built one similar Hiboy's also - worked absolutely great! Somebody on the board also made one once and posted a pic - he used 6 or 8" treaded tires (2 swiveled) that he got from Harbor Freight so he could roll it across his yard with a cab on it. A 1.5" ratchet tie down run though the center front to back will hold the cab on the dolly very well too.

I made mine out of 2x6's wrapped the corners in carpet scraps and bolted 6" casters with treaded tires on it. Fits together with 1/2" bolts and can be disassembled and stored when not in use. Fits both the cab or the bed.

Yeah I cant take full credit for the one I built I copied one I saw on one of the web sites that someone had posted a pic of. I glued all my corners with constuction adhesive for durability plan is to hold the cab to the dolly with a 2" tie down strap. I figured why try to reinvent the wheel.
