front spring question

Post by shane amigoni »

i know this has been answerd before but i cannot find the thread. can somebody give me step by step directions on how to remove the springs and the rest of the front end parts on a 65 f-100 seeing as how ive never done this. I have the body and the engine off and all the steering components are off. will i need a spring compressor? is there a certain order this need to be done in? Ive heard that removing these can be dangerous if you are not careful. anyway thanks in advance :)

no real tools needed. if you are dropping the whole axle and radius arm that will help. but its not neded. just remove the top clamp bolts from the top of the spring tower. jack up the frame of the truck. the sprign will becoem loose from the top spring tower. then remove the 1 1/8 inch socket sized nut and pull the spring of of the mount at the bottom.

There should be 2 bolts threaded down thru the top of the upper spring bucket. They thread into a small (ish) clip that captures the top coil of the spring. Once the spring retainer is out, take the nut off the top of the shock and the whole mess will drop down low enogh to do what you need to do. Like Fordman said, you may need to jack the frame up to get everything to clear.

The 65's did not have clamps. They used a hook to keep the springs from falling out.
