pain in the seat

Post by ICEMAN6166 »

got an 80s truck seat for my uni a while ago.

needed to swap the brackets so i took the ones off a 61 seat.after drilling the nuts out of the new seat braces, and cleaning and painting the brackets i discovered they will not work as the adjustment levers hit the seat braces. 61 has the lever at the front of the seat.the mechanism is above the brackets.
i know others have installed this seat and it worked.

went out to the bus to look at some other seats.found out the seats with the lever on the side do not get in the way of the braces so i had to clean and paint another set.

the 2nd set bolted right up.
shampooed the seat, came out pretty good looks great for the price (free).
also i took the carpet piece from the back wall of the 80 truck, was not wide enough to cover the whole tank so i will have to add some material to the sides.

now i need to clean the cab and put in the seat.

ICE, did you have to cut off part of the seat back release lever so it wouldn't puncture the gas tank. I have done this swap before and had to modify the lever/latch.
If you continue to buy imports, where will your children work?

Greg
i have not yet put the seat in the truck so maybe i will need to do that.
i did remove the cable that keeps the seat from folding over all the way.

Iceman,
I had to cut the lever off some and I also "modified" the tank a bit with a large ball peen hammer.

When I bought my last '65 truck, the fuel tank wasn't behind the seat; instead it was in the box. The late model seat fit without any problems with the behind the seat tank not there. I wanted the fuel tank outta the box and back behind the seat, so I had to do the above-mentioned modifications. I don't know what year truck the seat came out of, but it fits fine now.

Good Luck!

i dont care if the seat locks in place as the original did not.

Iceman,
I had the impression that you weren't building a restoration, so why are you against a slight modification to the tank?

I can understand your reluctance if the tank is not in really good shape, it may cause you to be concerned for shaking rust loose internally or possibly causing a tank seam to leak if hammered too much,,,,, as far as the reduction in the tank volume, I'd say the reduction would likely be less than a pint at each side of the seat/tank.

I'm just curious why you wouldn't consider smacking on the tank a bit....

took care of the problem.
the seat back lock levers are welded to a rod the width of the seat which is bolted thru the arms holding the back of the seat to the bottom.
i removed the plastic pieces covering the sides, took the 2 bolts out, and the rod.
took about 2 minutes time
now nothing protrudes out the back side of the seat therefore no cutting or bending of anything will be needed.

Iceman,

Does that mean the seat will tip forward 'at will' or won't lock back now?

yes its just like the original seat now.

would not say it tips forward at will as you still have to push it from the top.
