Got some more work done toady. I went to the parts house first thing this morning and picked up some more stuff. I had to replace the wiring in the park/turn lights on the front. I took the socket apart and took it with me to the parts house.

Image

This is what I ended up with. The parts house I go to is geared towards heavy trucks so they have all sorts of good stuff.

Image

I took the wires out of the new connectors and put them in my existing connectors.

Image

When I put it all back together I used shrink tube to hold the connector in the socket. The wires have to move a little when the bulb is inserted, so I left some room and put some more shrink tube on the two wires to keep them together.

Since a good ground is just as important as the power source I added a ground stud to the light housing. The right side already had a stud but the left did not. I used new studs on both sides anyway. This ground is tied into the ground for the headlight. Then the ground goes to a common ground stud on the core support.

Image

I got my flashers mounted and wired in. I still have to determine how I am going to run the wiring to the rear. I am using a 7 wire trailer wire harness to get everything back there.

Image

I also got the headlight relays finished and working. So far I have headlights and park lights. Tomorrow I should have tail, brake, and turn signals. I also got some single wire pieces to redo the dash light sockets.

More work done today. I worked on the turn signals first thing today. I got the turn signals all wired up and they did not work. They did not work when I got the truck so I decided to change the switch. The only problem was it has a GM column in it. I went to the parts store and asked for a 75 GM truck switch and sure enough it was the correct one. Once it was installed and wired in the turn signals worked.

I mounted the distribution box for the rear lights on the firewall. There is a 7 wire cable going to the rear. The front turn signals are run out of this box as well.

Image

Like most everything else on the truck the rear lighting needed a little help. I wanted to run a dedicated turn signal. I removed the panel and drilled two more holes for the lights.

I am running a second distribution panel in the rear to wire up the brake, turn, and tail lights. I will also run my trailer wiring out of the box as well. I wired up all the lights and will hook up the 7 wire cable once it is back on the truck.

Image

Tomorrow I should be able to finish the rear lighting and put the front sheet metal on. I also need to finish the inside dash wiring.

Yeah it's coming along nicely. Once I figure out my tail light issue I will be very happy.

I haven't used any of the parts yet. I want to get this thing on the road before I go and change diff ratios and such.

Got some work done but no pictures. I finished the rear wiring and got all the tail lights figured out. I wanted to go with a separate turn signal but all my trailers are not wired that way so in order to simplify the wiring I set up the stop and turns together. Since I had already drilled the extra holes I put backup lights in their place. There was a wire in the 7 wire harness for them so it was no big deal.

I am almost finished with the instrument cluster wiring as well.

In the cab it still needs the wipers, which I have a new motor for so I can run intermittent speeds. Then the fuel level, heater, dome light, and radio.

I worked on the truck this last week and I finally got to drive it. Once I got the wiring buttoned up and the front end together. The weather cooperated and I drove it last night.

I had my brother take some video.

Still have a lot to do but it is so nice to have it moving under its own power.

Ah, the sweet sound of turbo diesel. The sound of a turbo is one of my favorites.

I haven't driven it enough to tell you about the torque. Stock it has 450 ft/lbs or so. It's a 1 ton do I am not to worried about the torque load. I am still working on it and will let everyone know how it works out..

I have about $4,000 in the actual diesel swap. The engine and trans were $3,000. I had to have some drive shaft work done, then all the little things like fuel lines and stuff. Those things add up.

A little update.

I need to get the inside a little more finished before I can drive it too much. Yesterday I took the heater box out and cleaned all the junk out of it. Half the screws were missing that held it together as well. That is all back in and rewired so it works.

I also got the wipers working. I put in a 4 wire wiper motor from 78 along with the switch and delay box. So now I have delay wipers. I need to find a god looking container to use as a washer bottle reservoir, I also need a coolant overflow bottle.

The dog house it setting in place. I cut a hole for the sifter, I forgot to get the shifter boot from the donor truck before I sold it so I had to get a universal unit from the auto parts store. It doesn't look that great so I will be making one when I do my interior.

Today I need to get the heater lines run and the dog house finished. Then I should be able to start driving it a little more.

Hey 65 Crew....Finally found your thread over here on the Slick site....:)

I have been driving my 93 dodge around....I dug into its drive train cause it seems to have great power, as well as getting 21 mpg....:)
It is already running 3:54 gears in the rear....So I am looking for front 3:54 0r 3:55 to match, and stuff into the front diff of my project....

I hope to have more than trivial progress done on my Project soon....
I plan to have my donor 77 Frame tore down and the Dually rear glued in by Late Feb.....

Keep up the great work.....I Drool on your truck everytime I look at it....
I have it printed and hanging over my Computer.....:)

Hope you don't mind....

Chat soon, John.

Truck porn, awesome.

Did you find a wiring diagram for your truck? I hope I was able to help.

I drove it to work the other day, 25 miles each way. The Cummins has plenty of power. I need to get another speedometer gear ratio adapter for the 4.11 gears so I know my true speed. I also need to plug all the holes in the firewall. It was a bit cold in the cab.

I started to make some test panels for the interior yesterday. I will be going with a black vinyl or fake leather, with a combination of diamond and straight pleats. Last summer I picked up a used industrial sewing machine. It works very well. I am going to make a couple more panels today with different sizes of pleats. I am going for 70's trucker look.
