my 3 on the tree gets that way with the worn out linkage bushings. i keep a hammer in the floorboard just in case. you usually just have to wiggle the linkage around till it comes loose.

Is your clutch linkage adjusted correctly?the rod should be tight in the pocket .

try shifting into neutral let clutch out , then in and then into 2nd. that should check your syncro's. (double clutching)

do you have enough fluid in the case??

I think the clutch is ok. It goes into 1st and reverse fine. plenty of fluid..

It is fine from OD to 3rd.. From 3rd to 2nd (or 2nd to 1st) it grinds like mad. I tried double shifting and no luck. I shifted out of secend to neutral and tried to put it back in 2nd with no luck..

I think he's talking about a floor shift transmission....

Just exactly what trans are we talking about here? I'm guessing it's a toploader OD 4 speed with 4th being overdrive, right?

First check the lube level. Synchros need lots of oil to work right.

It is a SMOD, 3 + OD.. The fluid is good. Going from 3rd to 2nd it grinds like you are trying to put it in reverse..

Will it go in from a stop? did you try speed matching the rpms and the tranny. Giving it a little gas to get it in. It sounds like the syncronizers but I'm no tranny guy..

This really sucks Jason, at least you have all the "conversion" work done so if you need another it's an afternoon bolt in.
How long has it been sitting? Could it have gummed up a little inside? Some of the pieces in there really need to spin quite free so they don't "catch" when you change gears.
This can also be caused by worn shifting forks. In alot of newer trannys they have plastic pads on the ends of the shift forks that can wear down, this can make them shift really bad or not at all.
A rebuild kit for it doesn't look too bad price wise. If you have to do that it will at least be fresh and last you a LONG time.

yes and no. I still have the trans but I have a deposit on it. The guy is supposed to come in april for it. The stick in the mud is he just had a heart attack, so I'm unclear as to what's going on with it.

I also have a SROD here I believe it will swap right in , I'd sell that to ya for what I have in it but... I'm not sure what I want to do with it. If the guy I sold the other one to doesn't want the one he put money on I'd keep that and get rid of the SROD.

Let me think about it. I have about $200 into the SROD the shifter will need to be straightened... If you send me some measurements I can see if it will bolt in for ya., It's dirty outside but clean on the inside.. maybe we can trade fore something ya got there....

shoot me a en email, I have a line on a TOD I may want more than this SROD.

I'll guarantee the SROD is good for ya Jason. If it's crap It won't cost ya a nickle....

Problem solved.. I replaced the SMOD with a TOD.. :steering:

It shifts very smooth and the shifter location is much better.. I am very pleased..

OK, on to the next project..

Very good that you fixed it by replacing it. Gotta throw out the junk & put in the good.
