Y Block pic`s

Post by Alan Mclennan »

Can someone post some pic`s of a stripped down Y Block Please!, I think I found one at my favourite hunting ground wreckers, did want to look to interested just took some pic`s with my mobile phone. She`s stripped down and I couldn't see any Ford markings on it, there was also a Winchester Quadrajet carbie near by!, is that worth picking up?, never had much to do with Y blocks, sept in Iowa! :D
Honey, If I say I`ll fix something I will, there`s no need to remind me every 6 months!!

Y-block pics

Post by STYLN63 »

Sorry, I don't have any photos. But, they are fairly distinctive. Depending on how torn down it is...The top of the block has a valley pan cover (2 bolts) below and separate from the intake manifold, the center intake ports on the heads are siamese, the distributor is in the back and the exhaust ports look similar to a small block chevy in location (two outer/two centered on the head), the timing cover is substantial (4" deep-pump to block), etc.

Hope that helps.

Gus, thanks for the reply mate!, by the sound of it, it is one!, I cant post my phone pic`s, it`s beyond me!. The Siamese thing is a good lead!. this thing is sitting in the back of a old Falcon Ute, the block is on the tailgate and the heads and the inlet manifold are strewn around the back of the Ute!, I`ll go back through the week and see if I can low ball him!. I think it should be saved ! :)

Alan: Take a look at John Mummert's site. He has lots of Y-block pics and info. http://www.ford-y-block.com/

Alan: Good links from Tero. I think with the Y-block, you either "like and appreciate" them or hate them. I personally like them for the nostalgia factor and the unmistakable sound. IMO: There's nothing quite like the sound of a Y-block with a pair of Smitty's or Cherry bombs. Plus, I enjoy watching folks (mostly the under 40 crowd) try to identify what engine it is.
Think the engine got a bad rap because of some oiling problems which (as I understand it) can be easily rectified or has been resolved with careful attention to the build. Admittedly, they are a little more expensive to build than a later model engine, but there is an abundance of replacement and high performance parts available, including aluminum intake manifolds and even a set of aluminum heads are in the testing stage. But, you're not likely to find a built, ready to run Y sitting in someone's garage corner.
These engines are quite popular there in Australia and those guys have done some creative and innovative things with aftermarket parts. It would probably be easier and cheaper to source parts from them than from the U.S.
There are several folks on here who are much more knowledgeable about the Y's and I'm sure they will chime in with more info and opinions
If you understand what you’re doing, you’re not learning anything.

Ya got me!

Of course I was referring to the comments such as "well a buddy has an extra built 351 sitting in the corner of his garage that I can have for $250 buck and I plan to put that in my straight axle truck"
My point was/is: Y-block guys generally use their engines and if they are sitting in the corner, they need to be rebuilt (I personally have four of those). Of course some folks just paint them up really pretty and let them sit. :-)
BTW: I'd be glad to stor one of them in "Little Red" until you're ready for it. :-)

Alan, the unique sound of a Y block through Cherry Bombs you have heard.
That what my Uni was running at SS III.
The coolest sound is one with straight pipes though.

Don't get excited ...
the grey one is going into my current build the turk, and the red one is some day going into 38-39 truck rod with 3x2 94s'
and trust me if I don't finish one of my boys will.
I just hope the turk will look as nice as the motor, or Greg Ds' truck, when I'm done
