Hate when this happens.......................

Post by Greg D »

Picked up my stone guard & upper valance from the blasters this week.
Warmed up the garage and after an inspection proceeded to lay a coat of etching primer on the stone guard. After the primer went on I then noticed the stress crack in the end of it where it bolts to the fender - guess part of that piece is going to get primered again after I strip it and weld up the crack.

Couldn't see the crack until the primer added a little contrast to it.

I did that a couple of times on my build. It is frustrating but it needs to be repaired. As my friend that helped me with the body work would say "It's just a couple of more hours to make it right".
And of course he was right.

Oh yes, I'll fix it of course. Not really that big of a deal - I just can't move the piece til the primer dries. I'll want to flip it over and weld it from the inside too. I may wait til tomorrow to repair it so I can still get the valance primered too tonight like I had planned.
If not for the backtracking they both would have been done tonight.
That's what aggravates me about it.

gotta love body work.
went by my bud's house today and saw all my hours of hard work (66 cab with new floors and mounts) sitting on a trailer outside with no door windows and full of snow. i know, i know go cry somewhere else. lol. it just sucked seeing it sitting like that. thought about buying it back but don't know what i'd do with it anyways.

If it were a 64 short you wouldn't have sold it in the first place.
My Uni is the same way Chris - all that work and it;s sitting outside. I at least have it tarped though.

Just a quick question about the stress crack (since I'm a new & learning about bodywork)...Even though you are going to weld the crack up, do you still want to drill a small hole at the end of the crack to prevent the chance of it running further in the future?

Shouldn't have to as long as you get all of it. The heat will "relax" the metal as it's welded. With it not being installed it won't have any stress on it either. I'll run about an 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch past on each end to be sure I have it all.
I'll take a couple pics.
