Air vent question

Does the air vent need a gasket? I removed my air vents from inside the cab on my '64 to repaint them. I found old gasket material ( or sealant, not sure) and surface rust. I could probably make one out of gasket material or cork or just use form-a- gasket. Anybody have any suggestions?

Alf, what about some peal and stick foam rubber, used for sealing windows and doors!.

I'm redoing mine with silicone rubber, 1/8" thick and re-riveting the plates back together. You can buy sheets of it online and just cut out the shape you need.

Which one?
The little dash vents or the side vents. Side vents use 1/8" neoprene sheet that you can get at a local gasket house like GHX or Triplex here in Houston.

the moving part seals with rubber, needs to be taken apart and the rivets drilled out to replace.

body sealant is used between the vent/ kickpanel

Thanks guys for some very good ideas. These are the fresh air vents down by the kick panels. The gaskets on the moving parts are both in fairly good shape so I won't have to mess with them. I just needed ideas about had to seal the vents to the panels when I put them back in.

I think mine had some body sealer/putty on the flange. I'm not sure if that is production or not, I cut some gasket from 1/8 closed cell foam when I put it back together.
