generator to alterntor ?
so, how do i wire from the stock generator to an early eighties alternator? or a one wire alternator for that matter?
i'm hoping to not hack the factory wiring too much in this conversion.
thanks/

I just did this on my 61 4x4....
I found a mid 70's truck Alternator under the hood of a 62 truck in the J/y...
I didn't have to hack any of the 61 at all...
I will take pics if you like.....
send me a pm with your e-mail....

That's why mine isn't running yet.62galxe wrote: Now that I drive it a lot not much has been getting done to it.
Since wire nuts are designed for 120 & 220 volts I don't think 9 & 12 volt circuits are going to bother them much.

Chris,
if you use a 1 wire you can run a wire directly to the battery side of the solenoid switch and just box up your original charging harness untouched for posterity.

Yep, I run 1 wire alts on all my old stuff and the voltage reg and wiring harness setup have been gone for a long time.
Greg, sure is a lot simpler isn't it. Once I discovered how easy it was to replace the old stuff I never went back. TR

This 61 Uni I had about 18 years ago was the first one I replaced the generator with a one wire alternator.
All the lights got brighter, the turn signals and wipers worked better, and the heater motor blew harder than
the old generator ever did on it's best day.
I think the gens only put out around 25 amps versus the Alternators 60 amps.
Kept the battery charged up a lot better, too.
Wish I had this one back. If any of you spot a big window Uni around the KC area,
check and see if it has the stake pockets welded up.
I had done both of them on one side but sold it before I got the other side done.
May still be like that, I don't know. Wish I still had it. TR

My '62 was running with a GM (I think) one wire alternator, and I will use it with the 351C swap.
Anyone running the one-wire have the charge indicator light on the dash working?
I have a factory ammeter too. Anyone know for sure how this can be used with the one-wire alternator?
The meter was not hooked up when the truck was running with the 292.
