Site update

Post by JimDog »

Gentlemen,

Kid has kind of hinted around to the fact that we are preparing to install a major update to the forum software. In order to transfer everything into the new format, this site will have to be shut down temporarily. Kid had posted that the shutdown would be for about 24 hours. I think a more accurate estimate would be a couple of hours. If it is down for 24 hours, something went horribly wrong...

We thought it would be kinda cool to quietly shut id down in the wee hours of Christmas morning so all of you guys would wake up to a shiny new site on Christmas morning - but the more I think about it, the more I think it is a bad idea to do it then. If something does go wrong (it really shouldn't - I did a dry run and all went well), I don't want to commit to spending all day christmas troubleshooting.

The more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that there is no time like the present. I have a few days off now, and am comfortably hunkered down at home for a few days. So I am planning on doing the update this afternoon. The plan is to take this site down between the hours of noon and 1pm central time. It will be down for an hour or two. Please do not post any new posts ON THIS FORUM after 12pm central time today. It won't break anything on this end, but there is a chance that any posts after noon today would not be transferred to the new system.

I guess I should address some frequently asked questions:

First of all - we are upgrading the version of the software that we are using. It is the same software - just newer. It really is long overdo.

I have made every effort to make it as similar to this board as possible, but some things will be different. It is just inevitable. I will create some video tutorials and post them on the new site to help explain any new or changed features. But for the most part - the overall experience will be very similar. Most of the changes are in the form of added features - like a much simpler way to insert photos into your posts.

One fairly major change will be that the primary URL for the site will change. The new forums will be located at www.slick60s.com (after the conversion is complete) The old domain (fordtruk.com) will redirect you to the new site once it is live.

Once the conversion is complete - I will be adding back features. So when if first comes back up, some familiar things that you are used to seeing will be temporarily gone - like the photo gallery and chat. Not to fear - they will be added back - but they have to be added back AFTER all the data has been transferred into the new system. So don't freak out if you come back and a few things are missing...

One thing I see is when you open a link that's posted it open over the current site Instead of a new window.

Another update is in the works again. James is working on it and going to try to do it when it will be noticed the least like late nite. He is also working on making the picture posting easier. He said if you log on some late nite and can not get in dont freak out he is working on it, It should only be a few hours that the site will be down and as always we owe him more thanks that we can ever give for all he does for us here keeping the site up and running like he does.

THANKS JAMES
