My 66 F-100 Shortbed resto. Taking a while.
My 66 F-100 Shortbed resto. Taking a while.
I've been going on this project for a few months now. Slow progress with my busy work schedule. I figure you guys would like seeing my progress since there are lots of pictures. I already had another rust free tailgate that I prepped and is ready for paint. The rest of the truck will not be so easy. 45 years old and riddled with dents. Its gotta begin somewhere.

Spent all afternoon with a wire wheel on my angle grinder going to town on the rust in the bed. Then hammering out dents, and finally treating with some POR-15 Metal Prep to chemically convert the rust. My back is killing me.

Still tearing it down. The whole interior is 100% gutted. Doors are too. Next is the front bumper, rad support, hood and inner fenders. Then finally the cab.

More work done. Getting cab and bed ready to go to the blasters. I wish I had the money to get all the parts blasted.

Finally managed to get the frame painted. I wanted to do it this weekend but it rained every evening Fri-Sun. I used some POR 15 Chassis Black thinned with a bit of lacquer thinner to make it more sprayable.

Getting the cab and bed sandblasted. Doing it by hand was killing me. Was well worth the $500 to have it blasted and epoxy primed IMO. These are phone pics of them in bare steel. Should be in primer by tomorrow and I'll bring em home in the week.

Re: My 66 F-100 Shortbed resto. Taking a while.
Its all in white epoxy primer from the sandblasters.
Spent about eight hours today plug welding holes in the cab. All said and done there were 39 holes that I filled. 39! 45 years of people with drills and no sense. Removed holes from two other side mirror holes as well as holes from a topper drilled into the cab and holes hacked into the roof for lights and antennas. Also corrected the hack job of the stereo hole in the dash and some cracks in the door sills. The gray is just some self etch primer for now. Roof needs a ton of work. Looks like someone went dancing up there. The rest will be pretty good after some filler, high build primer and a ton of sanding. Its all in white epoxy primer

Built a dolly this weekend so I can get the cab into the garage. Since I cant work on it non stop it keeps flash rusting. Every time I get motivated to work on it again I need to spend an hour or two just sanding the rust off and getting to the paint where I can start making progress again.

Yeah, don't I know it. Looks like someone went dancing up there. Spent about 20 hrs on the roof alone. Maybe two more and it'll be done.

nice solid truck. dents are easy compared to rust.
No, its not a windsor or a cleveland, its a three fifty TWO!
Re: My 66 F-100 Shortbed resto. Taking a while.
Some of the guys on here swear by ospho - just wondering if maybe you could give your bare metal a swipe with that at the end of the day to prevent the flash rust?
Looks great. Dance floor or not I wish my cab was that solid!

Re: My 66 F-100 Shortbed resto. Taking a while.
Worked on it for about three hours today. Nose was running like a faucet so thats all I could muster feeling like crud. I did the last bit of metal glaze on the roof and hope to be done sanding on it next time I get to blocking it. AFS sanders are a godsend to working on these trucks. I dont think I could have progressed without them.

Thanks. Progress is so slow at this point even though hours and hours have been put in. Hard to photograph sanding and blocking. Still much more to do.
Yes, The Mach 1 is one of my other projects. Owned it 17 years now. http://www.mustangandfords.com/featured ... index.html

I'm digging the SVO too! Really solid truck to start with there and great progress!
Re: My 66 F-100 Shortbed resto. Taking a while.
Been plugging away at the cab and drivers door as I get time. Drivers doors are always the worst. They get the most use and abuse by far. Roof is as good as I care to get it. I used up an old can of green self etch primer that is likely about ten years old but I'm certainly not going to waste it. The cab is done with sanding and blocking unless I discover anything else before I start with the base coat. The door needs one more session with the long board before I'm happy with it. I shot it with another deep coat of high build but it will need to wait until the middle of next month before I get a chance at it again. Duty calls
Original pics of the roof for reference. Lots of hammer and dolly work. More duraglass and icing than I care to admit. But what is a guy supposed to do?
