Sloppy 3 on the tree in my 64
Sloppy 3 on the tree in my 64
I replaced the shift tube in the column, the bushings in the shifter arms on the trans, the plastic bushings on the shift arms in the column , and the damn lever is still sloppy as ever. What am I missing? Or should I just bight the bullet and put a floor shift in? , I have a hurst shifter, mounting bracket and rods, but missing the arms for the trans go figure, the model I have is no longer in production, and hurst does not have them. If anybody has al old hurst floor shifter let me know I'm willing to buy it.

Northern Ky. Burlington, right by the greater Cincinnati airport. I will be in Louisville on Sunday if you have any free y block parts you get rid of. Lol kidding I will be in Louisville though for my daughters volleyball tournament.

You may have a bushing missing in the shift collar, or collar may be badly worn. Early on Ford had a rubber bushing that fit on the shift lever. This was aprosimately 1.5 inches long and fit over the shift lever and was where the leer pin went thru the collar. If I remmember right our trucks had this bushing, maybe not at this point I don't remmember for certain. You may also have a problem with the wear on the shift handle ball that fits into round hole in the shift tube. At this point I have to ask how your cab mounts and cab mount bushings are? These cause more that just shift column problems but will cause those. If your cab is bouncing and moving around, then you need to address this issue first.

The cab bushings are original, and in marginal shape. I really need to replace them. Who sells them? I have yet to find a good company to deal with on this truck. I'm open for references. Haha

the rubber bushing that 64f100 was tell you about can be purchased from D Carpenter. They are cheap and could very well be your problem.

Re: Sloppy 3 on the tree in my 64
Honestly I have no idea
. I have never been able to shift it to see how many gears are there but I do know the 302 in the truck didnt come with it from the factory . I do know it left the factory with a 3 on the tree so I would guess the 3 speed is still under it but I could be wrong . The cab mounts are so bad on it that a PO welded some supports from the door sills to the frame
. I am putting an 88 crown vic chassis and drivetrain under it so that didnt matter much to me and needless to say I wont be needing the shifter for the AOD tranny going under it .
