MetalFlake Slicks

Post by jamesdfo »

Way back in the fall of 1980, I came down to Edmonton from Grande Prairie to attend my first year Apprenticeship training for eight weeks. During that time, there was a Car Show @ Northlands (ISCA?)
Anyways, in the show, there was section put aside for "drivers" (as oppoed to the "show" stuff, with chromed brake rotors, engine blocks, etc).
In the Driver section was a Slick, painted Candyapple Red metalflake :o
I have never forgotten that truck, and actually saw it again ONCE in the mid nineties at The All Ford Weekend in Calgary. It was in the parking lot, so again, I never had a chance to talk to the owner. I still wonder what has become of it. All I knew was I believe it was from the southern part of the province........

Anyways, that leads up to today. While digging around on the H.A.M.B., I cam across a therad that has been running for quite some time, entitled "Candy, Lace, Flake, Flames... wanna see WILD custom paint..." (currently @ 65 pages!!)

On page 64 & 65, there are pics of a slick with a whole bunch of wild stuff, looks like a ton of work, but so far I have seen no overall pics, just shots of it while the work was being done....

Kool! Found the build thread (ongoing), it's currently 31 pgs long!

Metalflake is really cool and hard to make look good.
If you don't spray it all the same direction - it shows.
Needs color sanded alot - it's rough (yea you can feel the flakes).
Get the good flakes (expensive) - the ones polished on both sides.
Finicky, finicky stuff!
You have to admire someone who can lay down a really Metalflake paint job - very labor intensive.

Add all that custom - you have to admire the guy.
I have done alot of this stuff (in the 70s) - it's pretty cool but requires alot of patience.
1964 F 100 - I am going to do "something" with it.......

The Application Of Flake Has Come Along Way Since The Days Of Gravity-Guns. I Had A Chance To Use The "Flake-Buster" Gun And They Are Awesome. They Blow Dry Flake Right On To The Wet Clear. The Flake Are Octagonal Shaped So They Lie-Down When Applied And Easily Buried In The Final Clear Coats. They Can Apply "Monster Flake" That Would Clog The Tip Of Most HVLP Guns As Well. http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraygundepot/flakebuster.aspx http://www.rothmetalflake.com/monster.html

I've been following that one for some time. It certainly has changed from its beginnings as a simple shop truck!

Hey Greg Do you remember how much clear you had to put on before you could start sanding? With clear lacquer it took a lot of coats or you would sand through the edges of the flake, it wasn't as much color sanding as it was block sanding. Ah the memories.

I have never personally shot flake - I just know the process.
I would consider it for my 64 but it won't have clear coat so there goes that plan.
I will likely use flat pearls.
I keep re deciding colors - I have until the primer is on the cab to make up my mind.

Gorgeous job, the amount of work just masking, let alone spraying that finicky stuff, makes my head hurt. An old racing friend told me he "cheated" with an aluminum intake in the mid 60's by grinding the edelbrock letters off, spraying it metalflake ford blue (to match the heads) and when a tech inspector questioned him about the intake, he pulled out a magnet, plunked it on the intake, & said "see, cast iron!" And they believed it :)

I asked how much he wanted when it was primer and red window tint...it was a little out of my price range but it all looks like real quality work. I like the red bedliner a lot.

To bad he is doing all that work and the underside is all rusty. If you look at some on the pics in the build thread he never cleaned up the surface rust and joint rust under the truck. The step wells will probably bubble up in a few years.

The style is not for me. But I can appreciate the skill to pull it off!

I am glad someone posts in here to remind me why I never, ever go to the HAMB ,
It IS a lot of work, give him that. I just never learned to appreciate that kind of work, I guess.

It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..
