Finally got trusses Friday afternoon, after all my help was gone for the weekend! Rained all day Sunday anyway so didn't loose any time there.

Got trusses up Monday evening and started sheeting tonight. Should get the other side of the roof sheeted tomorrow night if it stops raining. Wiring is mostly run and plan is for windows and door on Thursday.

Much better working in 70* weather than the 95-100* stuff but could do without the rain every half hour.

Still haven't decided on heat/air. How good is a heat pump where temps swing from -30 to 100 thru the year? We're kind of leaning toward a heat pump but still shopping/education ourselves.

Steve do you have gas available on the property or propane . With your temp swings a dual fuel system might be the way to go if your looking at ducted systems . You have a heat pump for heat and air above 30 degrees and when it hits the fan and drops down cold the gas or propane " high efficiency " furnace takes over . I started doing these setups in my area 10+ years ago and have one customer who was going through 2 tanks of propane on his house a season BIG tank . The year after we redid his system he went through less than half a tank of propane . Might be an option . The issue with a heat pump when you get down into really low temps is you are heating more with electric resistance heat and you can watch the meter spin when it kicks in :D.

Now on the other hand if you are looking at mini split ductless heat pumps many of them will work well down into some mighty low sub zero temps now days .

I am going with mini splits for the house. I have done research on them and people heat with them down to 10 below! That is plain crazy.
For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble

"The Iron Rhino"
300 I6, 3 spd manual, DS II/ HEI ignition.

Stuff I added to Hints and tricks

Just for reference mini splits are becoming quite popular in Alaska and have been used in Europe and Asia for a long time . We are one of the few countries still stuck in the stone age heating and cooling with a central system :D.

I would ALWAYS opt for the mini splits before doing the FULL splits!

We could all do splits. We just wouldn't ever be able to walk again.

Took a few days off, roofing is killing me!!!!! Went to the Knoxville Dirt Late Model Nationals for the last 3 nights, good time.

Got the "garden shed" built and the custom door ordered for it, east half of the roof is done, should finish the roof tomorrow evening if things go well. Got all the exterior doors and windows in (except the one I'm waiting on for the shed). Started putting in the "F" molding to put in the soffit. It's coming along but it seems like it's moving pretty slow.

Later,

Nice garage. Are you doing most of the work? Can't wait till I can built a man cave.
I would really look at taking that tree out so close to the garage. It will most likely die in the next few years.

I'm doing most of the work. Hired the main slab of concrete poured and have a friend that comes over in the evening and helps for a couple hours every few days, but the rest is all by myself.

Looked at getting rid of the tree but it's really healthy and the tree guy said he could do it later if we needed to with no problems. There's a tree just south of the building that is in worse shape. It will probably go first.

Monkey wrench #257 thrown into the works last night. I was just finishing the patio overhang (built the whole damned thing by myself)when Dianne got home from a 3 day meeting in Minnesota. "Hi, had a good trip. Mom fell today and broke her arm." Turns out her mom fell and not only broke her upper arm but also dislocated the shoulder.....on the other side! There goes the weekend. We're heading to Des Moines in a few minutes to Mother-in-law sit while she has surgery to pin the bones in her upper arm and fix the other shoulder. I'm her favorite son-in-law because I drop what I'm doing to help her. That and the fact that I'm her only son-in-law may have something to do with it.

Roof is done, side wall soffits are done, patio overhang is built.......I'm getting there. It's at least closed in so I can work inside on rainy days now. Started some interior work, mostly wired, ripped old south wall sheeting off the existing garage, started moving existing wiring to clear new doorway.

Later all!
