What did the backlash measure with clean gears? Are the required thrust washers in the carrier?

It takes 5 minutes and $40 worth of tools if you have to buy them to make sure it's set up correctly and won't potentially leave you stranded. All you have to do is stick the dial indicator on it to check backlash and smear some gear marking compound/ anti-seeze on it to check the pattern. It would also be a good idea to check the torque on the ring gear bolts. You're working with a mystery setup, not a factory-assembled axle. My :2cents:

Spec range is 0.006-0.010. Tighter makes for noisy gears and excess heat. It looks like you still have some gear oil on there, which makes a big difference when working in thousandths. Gears have to be clean to get a real reading, but you might be in the acceptable range without the oil.
