C6 tranny kick down rod

Post by milomilo »

I had a 4bbl on my 390 and switched to a 2bbl. I used the 4bbl kickdown rod on the 2bbl. It seems too long now as it down shifts when only pressing the throttle down a 1/4". Anyone know what the proper length from hole to hole is for a kickdown rod on a 2bbl? I plan on cutting and welding the rod back together, but instead of guessing, I thought maybe someone here might know thew correct dimension so I only have to do this once.

You could try a extension to get the approximate length and then cut and weld. Linkage on these old trucks is a PITA! I use cables. They are easy to adjust and look nice. You and try LoKar. Nice product. IMHO.

The rod is too long now so pretty easy to shorten and weld up. I expect it will be a guessing game to get the right length. The linkage for the rod does have about 1/2" of screw adjustment for fine tuning. I believe it should hgave around 1/2" gap before it hits the accecelorator linkage. That is what I am going to try to start with.

The kickdown throw is much less than the acceperator linkage throw, so it should not be engauged until the acceperator is between 1/4" and 1/2" depressed. At least that is the plan for now. If someone thinks I have the theory wrong, please let me know.

You shouldn't have to change kickdown rod length when switching between the two carbs. If using an Edelbrock carb; you need to add length to the rod.

The rod should be adjusted so the tranny only kicks down at wide open throttle.

With the engine off; have someone hold the gas pedal to the floor.

Push the kickdown rod back until it's fully engaged.

The adjustment screw on throttle linkage should have .060" between it and the kickdown linkage.

The 390 had a 4bbl with an Edelbrock manifold and I switched to the old style cast iron 2bbl. Thanks much for the link.

I had a brain fart here. My truck had a Cruisomatic originally. When I converted to a C6 I re-used the Cruiso kickdown rod. It was the perfect length for a Holley but needed a two inch extender for an Edelbrock carb. I started out with an iron intake and two barrel Autolite carb. I then switched to an Edelbrock 4 barrel intake and QuickFuel carb. The same kickdown rod worked on both combos. It must be that your C6 rod is longer than a Cruiso kickdown rod.

It appears to be approximately 1"-2" longer than it should be. Tomorrow I am going to cut it with a tubing cutter about 2" back from the carb connection and then open the throttle full open and measure how much to cut off. After the I cut of the excess, I'll put a short piece of rod inside the tube and braze the two pieces back together.
