What oil should I run in a rebuilt 240 in my 65 F100

The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

What oil should I run in a rebuilt 240 in my 65 F100

Post by stswartz »

Quick question what modern oil type and weight should i run in a rebuilt 240 cid 6cyl in my 65 f100. I've heard i should run oil with extra zinc in it but wanted to hear what you guys thought. The 240 has a clifford 6=8 package in it and we did boost the compression as recommended by clifford. Ive got about 100 miles on the engine and need to change out the break in oil soon

My personal preference is Shell Rotella-T 30 wt with a half quart of Crane break in oil. Run it for about 1000 miles, change the oil/ filter, put in the rest of the break in oil and go for it.
With the Rotella-T you shouldn't need any more additive after the first two oil changes.
I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?

I agree with skip, I am at about the same place with my 292 and am getting ready for the rotella.
How did you go about boosting compression issue?
Would you post pics of the engine? I would be interested in how you plumbed the water to the intake I am getting ready to intall a cliffor intake on my sons 223.
Thanks
John

The newest formulation of Rotella doesn't have nearly as much zinc in it anymore. Just happened in the last couple years. Most diesel engines in the last 10 years have also had roller lifters so they are removing zinc there too. Not sure how much they removed but we got a notice when I was around heavy equipment to watch for problems on older engines.

I have been using Brad Penn oil in all my flat tappet cam engines and have not had a single failure since going this route several years ago in our race engines. We ran killer spring pressures on solid flat tappet cams and never hurt a single lifter or lobe after switching to the Brad Penn. It's a little more costly (around $60 a case) but it's been worth it.

The break in lube is a great idea and most cam manufacturers won't warranty a cam issue without you using it during break-in. I have friends that put it in every other oil change to keep the high zinc levels. Royal Purple and Comp Cams also make a good break-in lube.

I also use Isky assembly moly lube on the cam lobes and lifter bases during assembly.

I have Brad Penn 10W40 in my '66. It's all I use now.
