Tumbleweeds' Tailgate

Post by azjake »

Hi All,

The tailgate that came on Tumbleweeds (our 1964 F100 CC) is sure different. It appears to have been made commercially, but could possibly have been made by an excellent fabricator. Has anyone seen one like this before?

I like the different look of this tailgate, but anyone can see what is in the bed of Tumbleweeds. So, I am debating if I want to keep it or install a factory tailgate.

What does everyone think?

Jake

Not factory. Looks like a nice job though. Guess it could have been made by one of the bumper manufacturers who supplied them to the dealers (seems to have been regional).

Jake: Hard to tell from the pic if it's a home built, or commercially made, but I do know they were built/sold by the aftermarket, typically seen on trucks pulling 5th wheel trailers......

Someone also used to make a gate that looked almost exactly like the stock one.. but it had no FORD lettering on it. I would think there is a good chance your gate is aftermarket as that gate will fit about 10 years of trucks...

I had one that was a twin to it on an '84 F250 4x4 years ago. It was an aftermarket gate the previous owner installed when he repainted the truck to get rid of the well used farm truck gate that was on it.

Those were sold as a "gimmick gate" was supposed to get better gas mileage as the tailgate was not catching air.

If restoring a ford was easy, chevy guys could do it.
