Quick Road Trip

Post by LM14 »

Took off about 10:30 Friday night and headed south with the Henry J gasser on the trailer. Stopped when we got to Camden Arkansas, 11 hours later.

Traded the Henry J for a '37 Ford 2 door sedan. Been parked in a garage since 1956! Totally rust free, only has 46,012 miles on it. No engine or tranny in the car but it did come with:
crate motor 302
AOD
front 4 bar kit
front panhard bar
front shock kit
parallel leaf rear spring installation kit
rear shock kit
one piece windshield kit
some spare sheetmetal
right side taillight
new grill and stainless grill surround

Headed back north and stopped for the night in Harrison Arkansas. Turned on the news after we checked in and all they could talk about was the winter storm bearing down on the area. We went back out to the truck and drove on home. Backed into the driveway at 1:30 Sunday morning. 27 hours gone from home, 1225 miles round trip. Fun times. I have a very understanding wife.

Already have a polished stainless and show chromed Heidts Mustang II front end so put under it. Still trying to decide on using a roller small block, the crate engine that came with it (still have to look inside it to see what was done to it) or finishing the build on my 292 Y-block and hooking that to an AOD. Hmmmmmm

Nice!

I was wondering if that 'deal' was ever finalized......
That will make a real nice project!

I have a '37 humpback waiting in the wings too. But it certainly is NOT rust free.......

Looks like a really straight little car Steve. Bet it wasn't very hard to load and
transport. Doubt if those weigh a lot. Sure can tell it doesn't have an engine by the
way that frontend sits up. Going to be a cool ride for sure. TR

Well, I've had a good week with the '37.

Sold the brake kit that came with it (Speedway Motors kit with pre-metric Chevelle calipers)
Sold the small block that came with it (stock 302, hydraulic flat tappet)
Returned the front 4 bar kit and front panhard kit to Speedway (even though the previous owner bought them 6 years ago)

While I was at Speedway Motors, I picked up a few things:
Heidts deluxe front crossmember kit for Mustang II suspension
Heidts new style lower control arms (needed for the deluxe crossmember, even though I currently have really nice stainless lowers)
A Stainless Steel Brake Corp disc brake kit for the Mustang II spindle (billet aluminum 4 piston calipers, billet mounts, cross drilled and slotted rotors, etc)
Adjustable rear lowering blocks for the composite mono leaf rear suspension kit

I'm still ahead $150 so I may go ahead and order my wheels so I can figure the rearend width and start looking for that.

Also bought a few little pieces for the unibody....but that will be a future post.

Paul, I'm bringing the south to the north one car at a time. I hate rust! That does make 6 vehicles I've brought back to Iowa from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kentucky. I did take a Texas car to Arkansas and leave it so you guys got one back,,,,it was the rustiest of the bunch though.

Made another trip south yesterday. Only to southern Missouri so not a real long day.

Scored a nice '71 Maverick 8" rearend to put under it yesterday. It is a 45,000 mile original with all new brakes, bearings and seals (it
had been sitting for 7 years un-driven). No rust, looks like a new housing. It's supposed to be the correct width to put an 8" wheel under the stock fender and get everything to clear nicely with a 4" backspace wheel, which is what I plan to run. They said it should bolt to the parallel leaf kit with the stock leaf spring pads, we'll see. My luck usually doesn't work that way.

Working on my PATE swap meet list for Dianne so she can do some serious parts scrounging while we're down there. She even has her own pull behind cart for parts (got it from one of our son-in-laws). Don't think it's a very substantial cart so we may have to bump her up to a nice wagon or something like that.
