Informal Survey
Informal Survey
I have an old set of stainless bed rails for my short "Lincoln" uni. I am filling in my stake pockets and using a custom tilting bed cover. I can get the bedcover to be just narrower than the inside of the bed rails. Since my truck is being built on a "what truck would Lincoln build if they built trucks in 1962" theme, would Lincolns have had polished stainless bed rails on them?
I want to turn spacers from aluminum bar stock and polish them to get rid of the 4 black plastic pieces between the bed rail and top of the bed on each side. The spacers would be turned to match the knobs on the tailgate latches I made.
I can't decide, what are some of your thoughts? Appreciate you sharing them.
Thanks,
SPark

Re: Informal Survey
I think those were standard equipment on 62 Lincoln trucks, so I say put them back on. Just trying to be funny, but they do look right.

If restoring a ford was easy, chevy guys could do it.
Re: Informal Survey
I think I'd like them better if they concealed the stake pockets. My other concern would be the water intrusion from the narrowed cover.

Re: Informal Survey
The bed cover would still seal off against the tops of the bed. There is an inch between the inside edge of the bed and the stainless bed rails. I have to get it done before it can get wet!

Re: Informal Survey
i have some different ones, from a ford of some type late 60s early 70s
aluminum with alll the correct brackets
bought them at least 12 years ago on ebay
never got around to using them but the brackets all fit in a coffee can and the bars were easy to pack so i still have them
only bad thing is the woodgrain decal is coming off and needs removed and the aluminum polished
ill dig them up and get a pic
i thought when i bought them they would look good on the truck

Re: Informal Survey
Since you asked, I could see a bed cover peaked with chrome trim over the rails. The edges of the cover would extend a little forming the Lincoln fins. The middle of the bed cover would have the classic curve like the deck lid above...IMHO those rails on your truck are not close to anything Lincoln would have used in 62.
I can drive it home with one headlight.
Re: Informal Survey
I say "yes" the lincolns had those rails... I like them
Re: Informal Survey
Steve I like those rails on there. Will look real nice when it is all painted.
I would keep them and make those other pieces for it you mentioned too. TR

I think those would really good on there Steve.
That comes from a guy who usually doesn't care for bed rails.

Re: Informal Survey
I'm not a fan of the rails at all but I am interested to see how you do your bed cover. Do you also plan to make your fuel filler a little less obvious? Great work on the tailgate!

Re: Informal Survey
Fuel filler will look stock but it's moved back behind the stake pocket to fill into the box instead of into the cab.
Been doing some drawings/planning on the bed cover. It's not too hard to do what I want to but I don't want it to weigh a ton. Also need it to hinge at the front/lift at the rear and those hinges will have to clear the gas tank at the front of the bed. I do have my latches figured out.

Will post pics as I go along with the build on it.

Re: Informal Survey
I have seen homemade bed covers from sheet aluminum.
1x1 square tube frame, aluminum soldered sheet onto it. Gas struts.
I saved a link for soldering aluminum with a propane torch, it cuts down on warpage.
