3 speed Ford manual transmission

Post by shipwrecked »

I am going to button up the 3 speed transmission here soon. What type of fluid do I need to fill it with?
I was down at a parts house earlier for the other gas burner and just happen to walk by the gear oil and notice there are a few things that I have never heard of.

GL3,
GL4,
GL5

apparently they all have anti- wear properties.

The machine shop guy I have been working with for the block mentioned that I need to be sure which fluid with GL # for that transmission.

What say the slick 60's guru's?

I agree....that's what I used in mine. Drained the old stuff out, replaced with 90 weight gear oil.

Lets take a look at the API GL-5 rating. It is a rating for EP (Extreme Pressure) protection. The higher
the EP protection, the higher the GL category. In the mid 60's, Ford needed better protection in their

Well I am annoyed beyond belief at the moment.

I was changing out that snap ring on the speedo gear and noticed the shaft started drifting out and i can't get it to go back to where it is supposed to be. If I tighten the transmission extension piece down, it binds the shaft.
Just struggled with this for about an hour before I walked away.

ImageNoticed a crack in the engine side shaft cover. Not sure if I can repair that with jb weld or if I could even find replacement piece.

This is the piece that is cracked

Take your main shaft out and make sure something is not out of place, keeping it from fitting. Measure your cracked part. Someone on here must have a 3 spd they've taken out and would be willing to part. You can't jb weld that part. It could be welded if you pre-heat the part since it is cast.
