Tom: I'm surprised that it took this long for Popular Mechanics to write about it, as I saw post about this on another forum back in 2013, and then posted several links on metalmeet,
Very interesting stuff, but I think it will be quite some time before we see the technology advance to where it is affordable for consumers/hobbyists.....

Agreed, cool technology but afraid it may be a while before its something the average Joe can afford.

After talking to a body shop that had one for a demo period... I'll pass.
Until that beam is 6"wide with a "feet per second" travel rate, it's like painting a body panels with a paint pen.
Plus you will still need to give the panel a tooth for paint and filler.
I can see where some hard to reach irregular surfaces, it would be nice. But still just a gimmick tool in my book. I can buy a LOT of Wagner paint eaters for that price.
