65 Mercury 352

Post by 1965MercM100 »

Hello everyone, I am working at restoring my Dad's 65 Mercury M100 with a 352. I am wondering what colors the engine was when it left the factory? I haven't had much luck finding any info about the Mercury trucks. From what I understand the Ford truck 352s are black blocks with gold valve covers. My Dad's truck has gold heads and intake with black valve covers. Also the oil filler is at the front of the intake and not the LH valve cover which is a rounded style cover I thought was only on car 352 engines. It's possible the engine has been changed as we don't know the history before 1991 when my Dad bought the truck. He's the third owner we believe. I'm hoping some Mercury owners can shed some light on this for me.

Great to see a fellow Canadian online! Pictures are always nice. I have primarily been around the 66 model year but there is a full resto of a 1965 M250 over on FTE by the thread name 1965 Mercury M250 build. I believe his engine block is black with gold valve covers.

I'm working on pictures....trying to figure out how to get them posted lol. Between my Dad and I we've owned a lot of 65 and 66 Ford and Mercs but only a couple of others with a 352s which were 66s. Most of the trucks around these parts are six cyls.

Good work, yes it does. Just a helpful hint, if you use the link that says 'img' it will insert the pic directly to the forum without having to click on the link and take you to photo bucket.

This is from the photo bucket app on my phone but it's a similar display on the normal web brower version

Nice truck btw!

These photos are a few years old but the truck hasn't changed much. Those "ugly" hubcaps are gone as well as the mirrors. I have a set of Mercury center caps I'd like to put on once I refinish the wheels. I've also taken out the electric fuel pump. I have the engine out with the heads and intake off. Once it warms up outside I'll get back at putting the engine back into the truck. Just trying to find out if the engine is original to the truck or not. Having searched some for info on car 352s it doesn't really look like it came out of a car either?

Well, that looks like you're starting off with a pretty solid original truck, miles ahead of most of the stuff around here!! (Edmonton)

Yes the truck is pretty solid. Spent it's life around Penticton, BC until my dad bought it. He never drove it in our nasty Manitoba winters.

I like it!
Sorry can't help with the engine, whilst ours were built in Canada, I don't think we got v8's from the factory until later.

Probably a good idea removing the electric fuel pump, the wiring next to it looks a bit nasty. Fuel/dodgy wiring could be a sad end to a cool looking merc.

That definitely is a solid start. The oil filter suggests this is a truck 352 but you will need to look on the block for a C5 start to a casting number. Post a pic of the warranty plate on the door and that will help. Do you have any extra Mercury hubcaps around you need to sell to raise some money?? :D
