Hey I was wondering if the tailgate lower rubber bumpers on the tailgate just used sheet metal screws, and where they are installed, measurements and all. My 64 never had them so I'm wanting to get them installed where they should be.
Also my tailgate works great how ever won't shut without using the handle, unless I slam it. I think my latches are worn out back and forward there's a lot of play. And I've lubed it many times with dry graphite lube, 3 in one spray and let it dry type.
Thanks in advanced

Re: Tailgate lower rubber bumper $, just sheet metal screws?
Just measured mine on my 64.
They are 9 1/8" from the top of the bed.
Don't have a solution to the gate not latching well. The old style latches did require a little SLAMMING to get it to close.
Most late model trucks now have a bear claw type latch that makes them shut easier.

Oh yeah...the bumpers did use sheet metal screws

Never slam the tailgate on one of these trucks. Pull handle out and close it. You may not have things adjusted right, although I don't recall there being much adjustment to the tailgate, just the pieces on the bed. Also, repeated slaming will cause damage to the parts.

Well I'm not slamming it real hard..just pull it back 2 1/2 or 3 inches and closing it real fast but thats only when I try to figure it out. I use the handle when I'm really using it. other than that it works OK. thinking of getting the polyurethane hinges too.

From the top of the rubber bumper or from the bumper screw hole to the top of the bed?, and by top of the bed you mean all the way up to the stake hole right?oldsmiley wrote:Just measured mine on my 64.

From the top at the stake hole, to the hole for the screw.

Re: Tailgate lower rubber bumper $, just sheet metal screws?
They did not use screws, the bumper was just pushed into the hole. Use lube and a small punch in the hole in the center and it will go in,
