'61 Dana 44 vs '64 Dana 44?

Post by aj64f100390-292 »

is there any big differences in a 61 Dana 44 rear end vs a 64 Dana 44 rear end? I know they should still bolt up but the parts catoloug goes from 64-72 so I figured somthings may hve changed but that probably just where they stopped and started I guess.

I may be picking up a Dana 44 from a farm 61 unibody, and when and if I use I will want a 3.25- around that ratio what ever is close in Dana ratios if their different- and keep the locker. my dads a nine inch nut so he has no clue, as far as if I can swap a part or the whole gear set, clutches and all that.

as always thanks in advanced.

The big problem is likely to be the ratios. D44 "case break" is 3.73/3.92. Thus, if your donor setup is 3.92 or higher numerically, it takes a different carrier for a taller gear. There are exceptions, aftermarket gear sets are sometimes available to increase that "break" range. I don't know of any which would bring the ratio down to the low 3's, however. So, assuming your chosen donor is 3.92 or higher numerically, by the time you purchase all the needed parts including carrier and gear set; you likely can find a donor 9" and set it up with limited slip more economically.

I have a 3.73 LS Dana 44 out of my 64 if you want it. I narrowed a 9.75 for a 4 link swap. 50 bucks? Could probably use seals... no rust as it is an AZ truck.

OK, is it a locker? If so Depending on shipping that sounds fine. I'm in the south west MO. area so It might be easier to just get the carrier assembly. and does anyone know what all is involved with converting these to 19 splines to the cheaper gear sets that are 27 spline? I am wanting to go 3.31 gears until I get a Nv4500.
