CGC Cuyahoga

Post by shipwrecked »

Yesterday was the 40th memorial for the sinking of the training ship Cuyahoga. A few survivors and their family members have been making annual trips to Yorktown for a memorial of their shipmates and this year is the time it starts a 5 year clock till the next.

We held a nice sunset ceremony on our parade field and then moved into the base chapel for the final memorial. I was part of that one.

Prior to the ceremony I ran into my former roommate from my duty station in St. Petersburg FL 2000-2001. Her name is Jetta( :nono: don’t make fun- she is named after her Grandmother who passed like 20 years ago). Anyway, Jetta was a E3 SN assigned to a different ship than I was on. But we were assigned the same housing. She is a few years older than I, and from Cape Cod. In the past few years, she has been the Commandants photographer. She travels everywhere with our Commandant and Vice. A pretty prestigious billet.

Anyway, last time I saw her, it was two years ago when we had attended the funeral service for a recruit who passed away while assigned to my responsibility. I don’t like that we run into each other at memorial services, but I am still happy to see her.

Here is the Wiki explaining what happened to CGC Cuyahoga and our shipmates.
