Differences between 2wd and 4x4

Post by aamotox »

Does anyone have a list of the differences between 1962 2wd and 4x4 trucks?

That's a pretty broad question. Anything specific you're looking for?
All 4x4 are 120" WB, no unibody 4x4s, no automatic transmissions, all are 8' beds.

The one exception to most of the Slick 4x4s is the 1966 F100. Those trucks were available in short boxes and had a Dana 21 transfer case; 4x4 or 4x2 no neutral or 4 low. The 1966 F100s also had the correct styleside bed 64-66.
The obvious differences for 61-65 f100 and 61-66 F250: 57-60 wrong bed, 4 spoke steering wheel, front lower valance same as F350 and up, front bumper horns, step up floor not flat floor, steering column below the dash not in the dash as 65 and 66 are.
Some less obvious: 352 equipped engine have motor mounts on the front of the engine, not the sides and the oil filter is mounted vertically not horizontally, Dana 24 transfer case, frames are straight no hump over the rear wheels, leaf springs all four corners.

Probably some others I can't remember now. Pat

I am more interested in sheet metal. I have heard that the front fenders and inner fenders are not the same as 2wd.

There are 2 types of fenders for the f100 & f250
Small opening & big opening
Tire size was the reason
All f350 trucks (even though all were 2wd) had big opening fenders
I have several 4x4 Slicks that came with the small open fenders

I believe for the 4x4s, except the 66 F100, the battery was frame mounted under the passengers floor. Because of this the 4x4s had a passenger side inner fender without the area for the battery to mount.
For the fenders, back to your question which was 1962 specific, 4x4s with 15" or 16" wheels had the small radius fenders, trucks with 17" or larger had the large radius fenders.
